Nikon's new full-frame DSLR

It didn't take Nikon very long to come out with a full-frame sensor in a smaller body (than the D3) -

http://www.dpreview.com/previews/nikond700/

It's still not cheap, but I think the D700 might just be my next "upgrade"... around Xmas... ;)

They said it has the same chip as the D3, so that means you can
shoot up to ISO 6400 with ease!  Might be time to trade in the
EOS 5D....

I'll probalby sell my D3 when this is out.  That's always been the only thing I'd change about the D3, the size!

just took my S5 Fuji out of the bag to compair them. It's an S5 clone without the better CCCD sensor, and another thousand dollars in cold hard cash. I used a D300 for a weekend before I bought the Fuji, and the colors were not even close (even using Nikon lenses). Tobe exact I liked the S3 better than the D300, and in a few respects I like the S3 better than the S5 (better to work with in macro mainly as well as "bulb settings")

Hey!

I was just talking to my boss of who is a Nikon user about this camera today. :D

It is a sign of time. This is one of a new FF DSLRs to come out. :D

I knew that someday the price of FF will come down and it seems like maybe we also have reach a limit of how much MP we could squeeze in a APS-C size sensor.

There will more mid to top level DSLRs from other companies also. :D

It is unlikely that the smaller APS-C type DSLR will disappear but it is likely to be come more of a lower end model.

Oh! And good thing that I didn't invest a lot of money on buying many of those prime and zooms lenses for APS-C size DSLR camera... I knew that time will come for FF DSLR

Take care,
Buddy :thumb:

It's reasonably (in relative terms) priced in AU as well - AUD3899 vs USD2999. That makes it only a little more than half the price of the D3 (RRP). Nikon Australia must be planning to sell a bunch!

It's an S5 clone without the better CCCD sensor

Not sure I understand the comparison - the D700 has a full frame sensor (same as D3).

better go back and check the three cameras out again. The bodies are the same basic unit, but Fuji uses their own sensor and electronics because the Nikon stuff dosn't hold up all that well to hard flash use (something todo with the triggering voltage). Otherwise they're clones. I might add that I've used a couple DX series cameras more than once, and my favorite is still the older 4 meg one.

Um, Nikon didn't move all the controls around, but that is surely a good thing. But the body is new, it has to be to accommodate the larger viewfinder.

That's correct.  New Nikon D700 (FX almost FF) and new SB600 flash this year from Nikon.  :thumb:

I think Nikon has something up it's sleeves for selling a $2999 D3 (aka D700) aa

I'm so hot for this thing that I had to go out with an old-fashioned "full-frame" manual-focus film camera yesterday just to calm myself down!

Oops... did I say "hot"... that's not very PC of me is it... my bad

Guys PLEASE excuse my newbee question but it looks like the crowd who can help fellow AC member out.
Since you guys definitely know what you are talking about ...can you recommend a semi-pro d-camera under 1K.
I was looking at Canon Rebel xsi , Nikon d60, Sony alfa and Canon powershot 12.1mp for size and build quality.

Please help me choose.

Getting the right cam I believe is a two step process:

1. Open a new browser window - type in youtube.com and once there simply type "dslr"
Watch lots of vids to your hearts content, soon you will have some favourites.

2. Go to a shop and look at them, hold them (this is very important actually!!!)
The way a cam is to grip is individually, if you hate holding the cam, it doesn't matter what you got really, it awkward for
you to take pictures with, and that is just not cool!
So, make sure you choose a cam that feels great to hold and use!!! Simply an important facet to the process this!

3. Ask at the shop: "Say, if I manage to get smudgemarks or dust on the lens, sensor or where'not and ditto
What should I do... Why ask for this? Well, to find out if they will clean your cam, in a good way.
I soon found out that a dslr = you need to learn to clean your cam the RIGHT way, from day no.1 Very important!

4. Learn about camera cleaning!!!

5 . Ditto!

marius,

might make sense to start a separate thread in Eye-fidelity.

I have to ask:

What is the use of the camera? work or personal?

Is this your first digital camera? (I ask since you group together a point and shoot camera (the powershot) with Digital SLR cameras (Canon Rebel). The DSLR is very very adjustable, allowing creative control over your image captures. DSLRs require you purchase removable lenses.  The P&S is mostly for automatic/programmed use and (typically) does not have interchangeable lenses.

Comparing the various brands of DSLRs is just like everthing else. personal preferences of the hardware (do you like warm sound or extended highs....oh wait this is about cameras. There is no "better" brand, per se. With a DSLR your decision is really about buying into a system. Camera body, flash and lens systems. Canon systems offer lenses that Nikon does not and visa versa. There is a slight difference in the imaging chips and algorithms that processes the image for each brand (akin to different audio DAC philosophies....a particular approach is not correct, but the end user will have a preference)

I would point you over to http://www.DPReview.com for the latest on what is what? Both the Reviews and Forums are very useful. And it also has Great camera comparison tool. Also check out: http://photo.net/learn/

If I were forced to make a general recommendation of a good semi-compact, easy to use, great imaging camera I would say a Canon G9. Honestly for snapshots and travel photos I think 8MPs is more than adequate for using the image as is was captured (no post processing/editing).

I myself have a Nikon D80 DSLR (10MP) with 4 lenses....for component quality and image rendition, and a Canon Powershot SD800 (P&S) @ 7MP....for ease of use). Nikon for hobby and Canon for work snapshots.

I apologize for steering away from the original thread......I just thought that starting new thread would not make sense. Just looking for smart, quick tips and suggestions.

Sorry for interruption
