I haven't even told my father I'm not gonna get that scholarship. I'm gonna end up working in a lumberyard the rest of my life. What's wrong with lumber? I own two lumberyards. I notice you don't spend too much time there. I'm not quite sure where they are.

No "scattershot" approaches please.

Just ONE good name per suggestion

AND reasons for it.

 :green:

Figured at this point (9 pages deep) it might be a good idea if I condenced my last entires on one post instead of 10.

In case my post has been buried here, "revolution" and "evolution" has been taken and submitted by me on 6-24-2008 on page 2.

I've always liked what Vienna Acoustics does with their product names. They're simple and not geeky and with a little practice it's much easier to remember which is which. (Easier than, say, the "M30" vs the "F20" -- which one would your eight year-old daughter guess was the gigantic speaker filling the front corners of the room?)

So, inspired by the VA approach, I propose as my single, non-scattershot suggestion, the Audio by Van Alstine "High Arts Series."

The name Van Alstine already sounds evocative of the high arts (perhaps because it reminds me of the Van Kliburn?), and the individual product names could be chosen to evoke the character of that particular piece.

So, this isn't scattershot -- really!

Phono Stage: The AVA Renoir (Monet, etc.)
DAC : The AVA Lloyd Wright (Ghery, Libeskind, etc.)
Amplifier: The AVA Tolstoy (Dostoevsky, etc.)
Preamp: The AVA Coleridge (Longfellow, Hardy, Shakespeare....)

How about the Destination or Destination series?

Every one talks about hi fi being a journey, many of us on it feel like its never ending - for better or worse.
How about a product that so good its a destination, rather than merely another stopping point on the road .... :green:

Brain storm phase:

Used to be called Omega star...
A omega star is actually a origami style paper folded 3-d object...
It's made from one square sheet of paper.
In Star trek, the omega directive is that if a omega particle is detected it must be destroyed as it is the
greatest and most dangerous force in nature ever discovered...
At a later star date... Spock is brought back to life by use of "The Genesis Device", said to be powered by a Omega molecule.
The Genesis device would, if life already was present, destroy that life, and replace it with a much stronger form of it.
So... The most dense star is a neutronium star...
The only person able to control a omega molecule was (Seven of Nine- 3rd adjunct, unimatrix-Zero), a female Borg.
Genesis Star?
An Omega molecule will, if detonated, destroy FTL travel... at a radius of 3.2 light years diameter pr molecule... powerfull stuff!

...

The omega molecule was found in the Delta quadrant... Delta is also a symbol of null... nothing.
Genesis is the denomination of a cellphone language called (Symbian60) My phone uses it (Nokia 5500) ...

Dac ( a device giving life by having the code of life...) , Pre - a vessel. Poweramp - A converter of energy...
It's all about creating life, a better version of life, based on the previous one, still alive!

I suggest just calling it: Omegastar Genesis - series, or Genesis Series or ... like that.

Alpha Centauri is actually 3 stars close together... not just one star. AC -A, AC -B, AC -G.
The group is called "Rigel"... Rigel means "In the middle" I think. Rigel = Rijel
Alpha Centauri has a planet in the Star wars movie universe called Rijel 12... Where a friend of Obi Wan Kenobi used to be.
Alpha Centauri - A is just about our suns twin actually (same size, colour, luminosity). Our sun is called "SOL" by the way...

My last one, I promise.

Audio by Van Alstine Definitive Series

The components establish, or define, the standard by which others must follow.  Definitive satisfies all criteria and is a benchmark for the future.

Thanks for all the help so far with names, people.  Please keep the ideas coming.

So far, the names I kind of like best (in no particular order) are Aurora, Stellar, Euphoria, Genesis, Nebula, and Revolution.  Of course I am still kind of hung up on Ultimate but need more help to get it past the others here. Lot of star-like names here, but that is not necessary of course.

Question:  Any research you people can provide as to what names (especially those listed above) are already in use in the audio industry would be helpful.  Like, I am not going to use Zeneth, an old US TV brand.

I would like names easy to pronounce (not another Transcendence - you can't believe how that has been butchered (try "trans and dance" for example).  Names that have a nice pleasant pleasing sound (not Aardvark or Warmonger), names that don't imply a negative (Novas blow up a lot you know), and names easy to remember (not another Sony XBR6251A-XLQa4 or whatever).

Remember we are shipping the new circuits in OmegaStar preamps and DACs right now at the old prices.  You can be the first on your block to experience something completely different.

Keep the suggestions coming, and thank you all so much for your interest.  And remember an argument that convinces my guys to go along with Ultimate can win the naming contest too.

Best regards,

Frank Van Alstine

To the best of my knowledge, "revolution" has never been used in the audio industry. I think "evolution" was used by Conrad Johnson in their short live series once upon a time. But it wouldn't matter if you call yours Evolution by Van Alstine or something in that nature.

Genesis used to be a speaker company out east that you might have heard of back in the mid 70's to mid 80's. Sound of Music (before they called themselves "Best Buy" used to carry their product line. Then another expensive speakers were also named Genesis.

I know nothing about the rest (Aurora, Stellar, Euphoria, Nebula). They all sound a bit "flashy" to me, and have a taste of shallowness, not enough substance or profoundness. But it's just my personal opinion.

I suppose if you don't have any immediate plans/ideas to improve upon your SS designs, "Ultimate" would be very fitting...obviously, it wouldn't make much sense if it were bettered in 2-3 years, but if its a "keeper", I say its acceptable to use.

Speaking of...any chance you can give us a general notion of what has been changed/improved? Is it a refinement of what was or more of a complete re-build?

I kinda like Ultimate.  I immediately made the connection with the Ultimate 70, as in great value and very appealing tube-like sound.  Could there be a Van Alstine product line with both tube and SS products?

It might seem confusing to add new-design SS equipment to a 3 1/2 year-old tube "product line," but there's also some logic in it.  Maybe add a letter to indicate tube or SS, as in Ultimate 70T or Ultimate 240S.

In any case, enjoy the weekend!

Craig,

The Ultimate 70 is probably going to stay as it is. Frank has always had a solid state family of products as well as ss/tube hybrids known as the Ultimate series. This name that Frank is looking for is for a new break-though solid state design, worthy of its own "brand", hence, the contest.

If I understand Frank correctly, this design will feature an SL and EC preamplifier, a DAC and I will assume only the current solid state amps which are the 170ex, 240ex, 260ex and 440ex series of amps (probably including the 3 channel and low impedance versions (example: 260EXH).

How about the "Ethereal" series:

e·the·re·al (-thîr-l)
adj.
1. Characterized by lightness and insubstantiality; intangible.
2. Highly refined; delicate. See Synonyms at airy.
3.
a. Of the celestial spheres; heavenly.
b. Not of this world; spiritual.

Just thought of a new one:

Audio by Van Alstine Synergy

I believe that would need no explanation as to the reasoning behind the suggestion.

How about the Omega Ultimate or the Ultimate Omega?  It keeps continuity!

Just got back from NC and DC singing the Bach B-minor Mass, so the name Hosanna also comes to mind.
