Just a heads up, we are working with a PROFESSIONAL cabinet shop to pump out a finished sub with the Maelstrom-X.    This product will be SEXY and built like a tank.    I'm not pinching pennies on the cabinet to design a value subwoofer.    If you are looking for a cheap sub, this won't be your solution, but they will be a good value when you compare their output, build quality and price.   

I'm thinking of two versions, one a smaller sealed design.   Approx dimensions  21" wide, 22" deep and 23" tall, target price:  $1000ea.     

The second, a passive PR based design with massive deep output.    It would be 23" wide, 24" deep, 30" tall, target price:  $1400ea.   

Both would be passive, you need an amp like the Face Audio F1200-TS to really get the most from this driver.   Most of the plate amps out there are limited to 1000-1100W max and they don't stand up against the pro-amps.   Having an extra 1000-2000W and a massive beast like the Maelstrom-X on-hand allows us to crush anything using a plate amp in the same form-factor/size. 

These subs are not for your average home theater install.   They are for people with bass disorders, people who grunt a lot and for whom rationality is a distant consideration.   If you fit this bill.... give me a call and get on the list.

This is the first product we are doing and I'll see how it goes.    If it makes sense, we will do some more models.    The Sicko wouldn't be that much more difficult, just larger and it would have to ship on a pallet.

Here is the first CAD revision.   This is 21" wide, 22" deep, & 24" tall.    The front is 1.5" MDF to flush up the big 18" Maelstrom-X.   The side has a 3/4" MDF cheek that has a profile & 1/8" gap between it and the center.   The front, top & rear will wear a veneer of choice and the 1/2" grill will flush up with the two side cheeks.   

This is about 80lbs of MDF, the driver is about 50lbs so without an amp, about 130lbs.    You can click on this PDF and rotate the 3D model around, zoom etc...

Performance?   This is the small sealed version with 1600W on it.    The room gain curve is based upon a 14' x 25' room with the back wall removed.   That doesn't give it as much room gain but might represent a system that is open to the rest of the house rather than a small enclosed room.     For a music system, this gives as much natural bass reinforcement as you will ever need.   With most rooms, you are going to see output way into the teens without an artificial 1st octave boost from room gain.

I like that    I know a few people like that.  -5db@15Hz from a sealed box - very nice.  Is that the correct SPL you're showing?  Have you played with one of these to see what the distortion is at those levels and down that low?

That is the simulation, with some "guestimation" on the room.   That SPL is normalized @ 1M in-room with 1600W on the driver.   In the real world, you will see some compression at those levels due to VC heating and cms & BL compression from about 20-25Hz and down.   The driver has 66mm of peak-peak linear BL but the suspension will be stiffening up as you near 60mm P-P.   

Measuring distortion is problematic because you really need to do it either in a chamber or outside.   Outside the noise is always questionable but I'd be able to get at least gross levels.   So the answer is no.... I've not measured it for distortion.   Partially because I've only had the production drivers for a week and partially because I'm of mixed feeling about how to get good distortion measurements that are meaningful.

Here is a view with the grill & top in place.    The brown color represents the area with wood veneer.   The side, will be a painted gloss black and while it is hard to see from the rendering, they are offset 1/8" from the body of the subwoofer.   Zoom in on the PDF rendering (click on the picture and you can rotate it in 3D & zoom).   

The grill will be typical black grill cloth, matching the sides.    This adds a nice contrast I think and the final product should look great.   All of these will be passive as I'm recommending using a single Face Audio F1200-TS to power them.

Ok... I should have some pictures in the next couple weeks.   I'm taking next week off so probably more like mid-Aug.

I biffed the density calculation on the MDF.    The sealed version is going to be around 130lbs and I'm looking at crating them and freight shipping on a pallet to avoid UPS claims and headaches.   

Sealed versions are going to be around $1300 shipped to the local freight depot, the customer would have to arrange pickup from there.   Residential delivery with a lift-gate adds about $200 to the price.   

I also am picking the the Velodyne contractor series amps to couple with these.   They are a nice 1000W (3000W burst) with room measurement & equalization tools.    They add another $1K but I'll probably have a package price with a little discount.   Another option is the 1KW PE rack-mount amps.   They don't have as much power but they are much more cost effective (without the room measurement & EQ) at $425 each.

Passive Radiator versions will be on sale sometime in Sept.   I'm estimating $1600 prices shipped, around $2050 with the PE amp (shipped).

You definitely want to take some help.   Those are some hefty subs and they are crated on the pallet.   Take drill/screwdriver, crowbar and some other basic hand tools to unpack them out of the crating.   

I've not even seen that pair so take some pictures.

I went on my lunch break to pick the subs up at Estes depot since it's not too far from my work.  I took some tools and cash just in case I had to tip someone to help me load them.  As it turned out I didn't have to do a thing. They had them out of the crate on a pallet with just the foam and plywood protection (inner wrapping?) since I told them I would come with a van.  One person slid the whole pallet neatly into my van with a forklift and that was it.  It look 5 minutes. 

I imagine it will take a little longer to unload and carry them down to my basement once I get home.  I hope I beat the rain from tropical storm Hanna.  I will take some pictures.
