Changing tubes with such different specs would necessitate redesigning the stage, different parts etc. Pretty expensive and some tubes could hurt the highs and drastically change the sound. 6SN7 is such a tube that is affected by a relatively small amount of load capacitance, so not a good choice.
As mentioned above, one could change the gain by using resistors at the input. Have to be careful what brand resistors are used though.

I was just thinking that since there in a lot of tubes may be some that are , you know of the same make and model, but that just have a below spec mu... so, the voltage gain across them would be lower, but I guess this would not amount to much anyway -

You know using a -51 tube instead of a x7 and that stuff, lowering the actual gain by 30% - but with the 6922, it's not so much to be had.
One would have to adapt another type of tube alltogether, as you say.

An alternative that could work would be to ask either maker of the pre or amp to lower the gain somehow.
