Given the huge price range for loudspeakers and the lack of a reliable correspondence between price and performance I think it's a mistake to decide on an amount to spend beforehand.  (Apart from having a definite ceiling anyway.)  This at least gives you the chance to fall in love with something significantly cheaper and save a lot of money for other things.

Mike, I have the Salk HT-3's in a room size similar to yours and they sound wonderful. My components are also voiced closely.
You have to treat the room a little.I use the Rives PARC to tame the bass ,without it at higher volume the room overloads. I live in  S.I.,NY  you are more then welcome to come over for a listen.
 Maybe have a mini-rave, could fit about 3 people. Would love to have honest opinions from other Audiophiles on what improvements I could attain IMS.
