Plinius SA103 vs Ayre V-5xe vs Pass X150.5
« on: 18 May 2008, 12:46 pm »
Hi,

Looking to add a power amp to my system to drive my Sonus Faber Grand Piano Home.

Of the above mentioned powers, which one would match the speaker more?

Pre will be using the pre-out of my Plinius 8100 int amp. A dedicated pre will be next in the shopping list...

Music genre:mostly jazz, vocal

Thanks

I have owned the Plinius and it is a great amp.

However, I currently own a Pass Labs amplifier.  The build quality on it is wonderful.  The sound in my system is very special.

Nelson Pass and his staff are the best customer support folks I've ever encountered.  You may wish to simply call them and talk about their products.  They are built to truely last a lifetime without problems.  They are very well designed and I recommend them without reservations.

I owned 2 sa-102 plinius amps that I ran as bridged monos.

I also tried an sa-250 for a time.

Then I owned a couple of Goldmund 28Ms.

I currently own the Pass Labs x-350.  If I had any money, I would grap the X-350.5 - It really is a better sounding amp than even the x-350.

Hi,

OIC. .so it is the X350... in my country the Pass Labs X150.5 is like USD1500 more expensive than the Plinius SA103!

not to mention the price of the X350.5.....  :duh: :duh:

cheers...

You know, How's about selling the plinius and getting a better integrated instead?
Say a Electrocompaniet ECi 5 (2x120w, 80 amps of current power) should do well on the chosen style of music there.
Or of course, a dedicated AW 2x120-M Dual Mono Power Amp (Has a somewhat more tight bass than the AW 120) and then adding the EC 4.8 (pre-amp) later would also be a suggestion from me. The AW 2x120-M can also be made into a monoblock by pushing a button, hence one can add one more later, giving then ca 2x400w.
This is serious stuff for vocal and jazz on a SF! Interlink suggestion would be also a Norwegian brand called black magic between
EC components. Tighter still can be had by using say Nordost Red Dawn  interconnects, using say Nordost TYR will give
more transparency and more glow to the sound - more warmth.

Garret H, from Soundstage has recently tested PBN Audio gear on a SF Grand Piano and thinks it to be the cat's meow... as a side note here.
He could very well be right about that, it would be ever so slightly more lean than a EC setup as per noted.
