Upgrade RM2's or get RM40's?
« on: 17 Oct 2003, 03:13 pm »
I was just wondering what everyone thinks makes the most sense for the money.  I am running 1st generation RM2's, 2 Larger Subs, and am waiting to take delivery on 3 LRC's w/FST for center & surrounds, if the new cabinet makers ever get their act together.  I will either upgrade my RM2's tweeter/crossover to FST's & mid panels to neo's to match, or sell them and go with RM40's.  Is it really worth spending a heck of a lot more money for these (RM40's) or will the RM2 upgrade get me to 90% plus of the way there. (Ah, yes, the law of diminishing returns!)
Yes, I know the RM40's would be better, but, if funds were tight, how would you all approach it?

How easy would it be to get the RM2's upgraded? If it is really cheaper, then go this route.  However, if you are in a larger room the RM40's will really be that much more.

I'd get the 40's and never worry about upgrading again (oh wait, that is what I did) :-)

I was just at Brian's listening room comparing the RM-2's w/ megawoofers and FST tweeters. I was really hoping that I could save some money and just get the RM-2s. Anyway, we listened to the RM-2s for about 20 minutes and my friend and I were really impressed w/ the sound.

I was excited, save close to $2k and get these great speakers!

Then Brian hooked up the RM-40. First song started playing, and it wasn't even close. The RM-40s killed the RM-2s in just about every aspect. It took about 20 seconds to make the decision to get the RM-40s.

I will say that I thought the bass from the RM-2s was a little more pronounced, maybe a tiny bit lower, but it was also much "boomier", didn't have the tight definition that the 40s had.

Needless to say, I now have an order in for the RM-40s.

Thanks for the replies.  I guess I'll just wait until I can do the RM40s.  I do have a larger size room and the lowbass is not really an issue with the 2 Larger subs crossing in at 63Hz.  I was more concerned with the mid-high clarity and output level and I guess it just makes sense that the RM40's would be more suited to the task.
Thanks again for the advice!  $$$Cha-ching$$$

Some people are upgrading from the 40's to the RM/X, so be on the lookout for a used pair (good deals can be found).  Good luck.  Once you do get a pair, I can say that it's gonna end any upgrade-itis unless you expand your budget to more than $10k per pair.  The 40's are indeed THAT good.  Oh yeah, and don't skimp on the crossover, get the Auricap upgrade at the minimum and the FST tweeter.

What sort of RM40's (what options installed, color, etc) are
being put up for sale by the forum members?  Would be interesting
to see them.  Are they listed on the VMPS site or what?
Any ones that were built new with the FST factory pre-installed?
