My oldish Linksys Wireless G seems to be crapping out.   What should I buy as a replacement?  I have a cable modem.

The Apple Airport Extreme Base Station is by far the best wireless router I've ever used. It works equally as good with Macs and PCs. It also supports 802.11 a/b/g/n.

I'm surprised your Linksys crapped out. I have a linksys wrt54g running DD-WRT firmware that's been running nonstop in my attic for at least two years, and it gets hot in my attic -- well over 120 degrees in the summer.

If anything happened to it, I'd probably replace it with another linksys wrt54g or whatever is currently available that can run DD-WRT.

How well does the extreme base station run with a Squeezebox? Are there any issues?

I've had good results with a Netgear Rangemax router. I use it for routine networking as well as streaming music to a Squeezebox 2 which is in a distant part of my house.

The ActionTec broadband router that was provided by Verizon FiOS has wireless built-in, and it works much better than the NetGear and BuffaloTech wireless access points I've used in the past...

I have used an Airport Extreme Base Station for my home network for over a year.  It handles both music and internet access.

I have 2 Squeezeboxes that work fine wireless.  The base station is on my second floor, the main stereo is on the first floor and the other squeezebox is in my basement.  The main interface I use to control the music is the browser based interface on a laptop.

I also have a 750G drive with my music library attached to the Airport Extreme Base Station via it's USB port.  It works great.  I have a Mac mini running the whole show and it has another 750G drive attached that I use for backup of the music library.  Since I got my library loaded last May, I haven't used my Audiomeca transport much and it has not even been powere on since Christmas.

I love the simplicity of the Airport.  Both Mac and PC can use the attached storage and it is reliable and robust (important when your intenet access is Wildblue statalite...).  Well worth the money - it is the only wireless router I recommend to friends.

A very broad subject because of so many variables and brand names which don't necessarily play nice with each other. Minimally, what I look for with my network equipment AND software is that it is, at least, DLNA and Wifi-certified. Brand name becomes secondary after those considerations. Reading up in those areas may help you make up your mind on what you want to do and redirect you in another direction you may not have been aware of and/or considered before.

So, you can connect a HD to your AE Base Station and access music files wirelessly from another computer in your home?

Yes indeed.  I share the drive between a mac mini for home music and a PC that stores my wife's Ipod library on it and it has some of my shared files.  Very simple to set up here on the farm since I don't really have to worry about anyone hacking my network...

OK gents tell me if I'm about to jerk the wheel into the ditch.

1.  Mac laptop of some kind.  Any specs. of particular import?  RAM etc.  I certainly need USB
2.  Apple Airport Extreme
3. One or two ancillary HDDs of some size.....I have a 500gig Seagate now.

I want to use the Airport Extreme as my wireless hub into a Mac.  I want, at least in the short term, to run USB from the Mac into my Musical Fidelity X-DAC V8.  Maybe later a Squeezebox might be needed.

This way I can have someone who knows what he is doing, like Tirade, load a HDD with my music in a near optimal way.  I can just barely navigate iTunes let alone manipulate FLAC etc.

Thanks to everyone for their thoughts so far.
