Gallery show

This coming weekend I'll be having my first public exhibition of my photos, along with another photographer.  I don't suspect most people reading this will be in the area, but if you are stop on by (and bring your checkbook!).  There's this event in Milwaukee, WI called Gallery Night where a bunch of businesses in the downtown area show artwork.  I don't know much about it myself, I've never attended it, but I guess it's been going on for years.  It's in a restuarant called the Riverfront.  We got in on this kind of by accident as Bob, the other photographer, was reserving the restuarant for some meeting of his and got to talking about the art on the walls with the manager.  To make a long story short they are letting us show our prints there, so it's pretty dang cool.  The only thing is that we've had such a short notice to get this all set up, so I've been busting my hump making picture frames.

Here's the flyers we distributed publicizing it:

Here's the area we'll exhibit in, those chairs and tables will be moved out.

I don't expect to sell any prints, but it sure would be sweet.  In any case, I'm excited to at least have a public showing.

Very cool!   8)

I'd go but it's about a 9 hour drive for me so I'm thinking I won't be able to make it.  :(

Best of luck though!   :D

Way coool Nathan.  Congratulations!!!   8)

My brother-in-law and his family live in Grafton. Sometimes when we're visiting I'll take a cruise to have a little time to myself . A few times I've driven to and around Port Washington. I swear that some of your winter lakeshore and B&W's of abandoned buildings are places I've seen in my travels.

I really like your work.   :thumb:

Thanks everyone for the well-wishes! :)  I still have a lot of work to do, though.  So I'm not really excited about it yet—I think only when everything is finally mounted and displayed on Friday afternoon will I be able  to breathe a sigh of relief!  Heh!  To add to matters, Bob's printer is experiencing nozzle clogging issues so I had to print up all his prints too.  Doh!

Martyo, yep I will probably have two shots in there from Grafton, I did some shooting in Lime Kiln Park one day.  Most everything else is in and around Port.  It's not exactly Yosemite or Arches for natural beauty, but in black and white everything looks better!  In a way I will be seeing my own prints for the first time at this show, i.e. fully matted and framed and lit properly (hopefully).

Best of luck Nathan.  I'll be out of town, so I'll miss the showing.

If you have another one sometime in the future, I'll try to make it.  Should be good weather this weekend (finally).

Congrats, Nathan, and good luck with the show!  I wish I could be there to see them...

Is there any chance that you can set up an online gallery of the show images?  I'm sure that many would like to see the line-up!

Ivan.
Thanks! Yeah, Australia that might be a bit of a commute!

Most of the images which will be shown can be seen here.  I don't know for sure which ones I will pick yet, I will probably run out of space to put them before I run out of prints, but almost everything will be pulled from this pool.  I think I've got like 15 frames so far.  I've lost track.  The other photographer has smaller prints so that frees up some space. I'll post pics later of the exhibit.

Really great work. Very atmospheric. Some of it seem to be ripped right out of a vampire or werewolf movie. hehe I love it.

Yes, I hope it went well.  I always tell people that if they really want to pay an
artist a compliment, they should BUY a piece of their work, so said artist can
afford to keep making more art!

Good luck.

Good point.
After reading that, I went looking for where to buy some of his work. Not a promise mind you, I've got to see the price first. But I couldn't find anything.
Somewhere around here is a thread that Nathan posted his main site where you could but his photos.

I did run across this one, lots of cool stuff in here (but no way to purchase):

Although we didn't sell anything (didn't expect to) the show went very well, with a lot of people coming through and a lot of interesting, positive comments.  Friday night the place was totally packed, but saturday was a lot slower.  We had to tear down by 5:30PM because the restaurant needed the space.  Once the daylight disappeared on Friday night the display looked great!  The prices were from $125-$300 depending on size.  Nobody really commented on the prices but one gentleman who had been through other art galleries on the strip told me, "Well it's nice to see stuff with REASONABLE prices for a change!"  So that was encouraging.  I also learned a lot about what types of things people respond to in the photos.

In regards to what Bob in St. Louis was saying, I do have an Imagekind site, however I haven't uploaded most of my 4x5 images to it.  There is some stuff there and I do intend to put more up.  It's a slow process both on the Photoshop end and on the uploading end.  (very large JPEGs)  But anyway, ImageKind is an ala carte thing where you can order whatever you want, just a bare print, a print on canvas (not recommended for photos) or choose from all sorts of frames and mats.  Personally I like to control the whole process, though.  I think framing and the image are part of the same art object, but I know people might want the frame to match their furniture or things like that.  So in that sense ImageKind provides stuff I could never do, but if you buy directly from me it's a hand-made print matted exactly how I want it.

This whole show was put together in two weeks' time.  I had 17 images on display and Bob had about a dozen or so.  All the frames for this show were hand made by me and hand painted by my parents.  No way I could've done it all myself on such short notice!  The only thing I had to skimp on was glazing.  Not only would it have meant a huge expense, but my moulding was not deep enough to support it.  Next time I am going to try plaque mounting on MDF sheets.  I bought a roll laminator machine to do this.

If you are interested in anything from the show it's all available, just drop me an e-mail or PM.  They are ready to hang with wire and the whole bit.  I would just have to get some shipping cartons first.

We will be back at this same location on July 25th & 26th for another showing, this time better prepared! :)  Thanks for all the well-wishes guys! :thumb:

:D Any way you can upload some of the stuff you had at the show so we can see and perhaps buy? Might be a good way to generate some bucks and maybe kick back a few to John for the site.
