i have a JVC HD1 projector and a Sony blu-ray player and both dont even have an ON /OFF switch
The manufacturer forces you in a way to keep it always on.

I suspect the general EE idea is it is better for the gear to be always on, except when it becomes too expensive for instance class A heavy poweramps and tubes

Turn it off you selfish bastards.
Did I say that out loud? aa

Depends on how big the power supply is. My Odyssey amps have 360K in them, and it takes a long while to charge them. When you turn the power to the amps off, the caps start a discharge in about thirty to forty minutes. The way I have it figured it takes somewhere around 36 hours to fully charge them. So I'll just donate the $3.00 a month to Duke Energy to be able to listen to them anytime I want to.

I also own the Odyssey Mono SEs and if they are shut off it is only to change cables or the power is off to the house.  When I purchased Klaus told me it would take over a day for the capacitors to fully charge and this charge would be lost in less than an hour if the amps are shut-off.

Yes, I might be greedy and selfish but I am not going to shut them off.  If the man that designed them says to leave them on and by reputation has an excellent ear for sound I am going to leave them on!

I also have a Candela and shut it off imediately after listening sessions.

I had the Korato class A amp here for a while and I can say that it needed at least 6 hours to open up, but still sounded better after a full day (24 hrs). This is one amp that needs to be on all the time, and being class A, it throws off a bit of heat and uses up some energy, even at idle. I've heard this about class A amps, so I think the answer there is a definite "yes, on all the time".

My regular components however need about 20-30 minutes to warm up, but I do think they sound better yet after an hour or so. That is definitely true for the tubed components (preamp, phono stage). On all the time? I think not, but definitely better with some time turned on.

Enjoy,
Bob

In the 70's when I first started hearing about leaving gear on 24/7 I did. Over the years it got to be warming up the gear for 1/2 hour or so. I believe it was and still is me that needs to warm up, or actually chill out. I now have tubed gear and just turn it on and let it rip. That would also be the manufacturer's recommendation.

You know guys...I have Ric Shultz Mono Blocks, and the ARC LS-9 Pre.  The mono blocks, four of them, run at about 5wpc (idle) and the LS-9 (20wpc) and I still turn things off at night and when I go out for a period longer than 3 hours...
I just don't think it's necessary to have things on all the time...  When I had tubes, I did the same, one, they use a LOT more juice and two, tube life...
