Dropping power rating of Clarinet resistors...
« on: 12 Apr 2008, 06:01 am »
Hello.

I've been examining the various modifications DIYers have made to the Clarinet kit and noticed that others have used Vishay nude resistors (rated at .6 Watts) in circuit positions that specify a resistor rated at 1 Watt.
Before I do this myself I would like to know whether this is potentially unsafe, or if the 1 Watt rating is actually somewhat negligible.

Thanks.

Each resistor requires a different rating and must be calculated.  I standardized on the 1W rating because then you didn't have to buy so many parts, and it made the layout easier with more symmetry.  Typically only the plate resistors and those in the power supply require the full dissipation rating.  Also, any resistor with more than 250V across it also requires the higher power rating.  So yeah, substitute all you want, but calculate dissipation first, then multiply by 4.  Use that as a guide.

For example, if you plan on dissipating 1W of power, use a 4W (3W to 5W) resistor.
