I built mine using 3/4" brass all-thread and fittings.  The shelves were made from Maple workbench tops... Grizzly  The price of brass is now through the roof but, steel and SS are both still very reasonable and available from McMaster-Carr and MSC.

Hey!

Gordy, those Maple blocks look wonderful. Wish I could afford them for my shelf... look like the one that about the same size as my DIY shelf right now is $130 each! And I would need 3 of them plus shipping... ouch! :o

It will look very pretty. But I guess MDF painted black will do for me right now  :icon_lol:

Take care,
Buddy :thumb:

Hey!

Robin/satfrat your rack is full of heavy stuffs there. The photo perspective angle make it looks like it is almost up to the ceiling! :o

That picture was taken last summer when the HTPC was bare. I now have a Hammond choke in the back, a Channel Island VDC-SB power supply sits up front on top of a Sony burner and a Trends UD 10.1 USB Transport sitting up front on top of a 750G exterior hard drive and in the middle of all this is a stack of marble & maple that raises a KingRex power supply/Shakti Stone/Acoustic Revive RR-77,,,,, all stacked to a height of 6.6'. The damn thing's highter than me. hehehe

When you have a component rack in close to your loudspeakers like I do, you need shelves that will not only isolate the component from the rack itself but shelves that will drain what energy they're obsorbing. Sanus uses a duel compound in drilled holes on each corner of the shelf that sits on spikes attached to the steel rack. It's said that these 2 compounds both isolate the shelves from the steel rack but will also burn off energy that the shelf itself is obsorbing from soundwave vibrations.

I think the worse thing you can do to components is place them in an unvented cabinet. Components need to breathe & vent,,,,,, just like me.  :hyper:

See ya soon Buddy.  :thumb:

Cheers,
Robin

Hey!

Wow! That is a really tall rack you've got there. :D

OK, how about a little show and tell than. Here is my cheapie DIY double bays rack...

Made out of 3/4" thick MDF painted black with 7/8" threaded steel rods :D Actually I made all of my shelf in my room except the CD rack. With this threaded steel rod style I could easily adjust the space between and very easy to move... when I moved to my current place I just took it a part and they packed flat easily stuff in the moving van. :D

Wish I could afford to make my audio rack from Maple blocks but they are pretty pricey  :icon_lol: But! these seem to work well :D

Take care,
Buddy :thumb:

I can vouch for the Mapleshade racks being the owner of two of them -- the smallest 2-sjhelf V.1 and the massive 3-shelf V.3.  You could use these as jackstands for cement trucks -- they are incredibly strong, stiff, and heavy, not to mention really nice looking.

If you live anywhere near Boulder Colorado, I'll be selling the big v.3 fairly soon and replacing it with a 3 shelf v.1.  I'm scaling down and don't need this big monster anymore.  But it will be more than $1000 :D.

I have had an Adona Corporation rack since Paul was making them in his garage. I upgraded the shelf bumpers since the original design was poor but otherwise I've been very happy and it's shot loaded and rock solid.
