My stratos has arrrived
« on: 1 Apr 2008, 11:27 am »
Hi Guys,
My stratos has arrived :D. Thanks to Sridhar, the friendly indian distributer.
Hooked it up two days back. Sounds good right out of the box.
Slightly harsh and the bass is a bit bloated out of the box. Waitin for the breakin period.... 8)

Nice setup! What preamp is that clothed in lovely wood? Tubes and SS amplification must soind very good once the Startos settles down.
Best regards
Dennis

The preamp and speakers are designed by a hobbyist manufacturer / friend of mine.
Acoustic portrait PM1 preamplifier

My speakers have come alive suddenly. The speakers go down to 35hz +-3db. The amp has the woofers by its balls and the bass goes down to depths I have never heard. I suddenly feel the need for a bigger room. The medium size room is probably contributing to a slightly thick  but extended bass I am hearing now.
Everything has improved over the Nad amplifier I had before and it is just three days only.
Thanks Klaus :)

The speakers are an MTM design made with Vifa drivers made by the same guy who made my preamp...I did an A/B against the quad 22L when I picked up these. I liked this one better :)

Done 50 hours now. The initial stridency has gone. Sound is quite smooth. Strong and extended bass. :D. I guess it will get tighter as the breakin happens..... :)

Congrats on the Stratos amp.  I upgraded from a B&K amp and was very impressed at the time.

With the preamp, does that price, Rs.78,000, translate to ~US$2000?

Thanks,
B

Yes, the preamplifier price of 78k roughly translate to around 2k$.It is a pretty good preamp. The designer is a friend so I got a special price .We have done some A/B comparisons with some others costing in the range of 4k to 5k $. We liked this one better. We have quite a bunch of audiophiles in Bangalore who have upgraded to this preamp from ones that cost upwards of 4k$. I don't want to get into brand names as it is a very sensitive issue

Looks like my stratos has burned in. After 250 hours, I stopped keeping count. It must have done some 350 odd hours now.
Very organic sound with good control. Whatever I throw at it, classical, Jazz, classic rock is handled with aplomb. The highs are highly detailed without any hint of hardness often associated with SS. The bass is solid with a great sense of foundation. . Midrange walks the middle ground by sounding detailed with sufficient warmth. No threadbare-clinical or tube warmth here.   Just the right amount of warmth. Just the way I like it. The odyssey can hold a soundstage very convincingly. Instruments are tightly locked in place with no fuzziness around them.
I am enjoying the amp.

Great to hear and thanks for the report! I still have at least a month before I get mine...and then break-in time...but if I can look forward to all that...  8)

The virus is spreading  :D
A good friend after listening to the odyssey, has ordered a pair of khartago extreme monoblocks for his proacs .

My friend received the khartago mono extremes. He upgraded his proacs to a pair of Green mountain audio EOS2 speakers. The sound is in a different league. Just lovely  :)
Kudos to odyssey and green mountain audio for doing such a great job.
I'll send up some pictures soon... :D
