Blu-Ray machine with 480i via HDMI
« on: 25 Feb 2008, 11:40 am »
I'm looking for a Blu-Ray machine that supports a pure unmessed with 480i bitstream via HDMI for my outboard video scaler/processor.

I see Sony has one (BDP-S500) but it looks like the video dept. is auto select only.  I'm afraid of getting a machine that supports 480i but won't be able to maually select it for my processor needs.

Any ideas?

Why???????

Why would you throw away data only to make it back up with scaling.

Even the best scaler's guess isn't as good as the true data.

Why?

Because professional grade high-end processors have much more advanced de-interlacing algorithms than what you will find in DVD players, resulting in cleaner, sharper video.  Not to mention the overall better quality video adjustment.

Hope that answers your question...

He's talking about SD scaling (where the true data is indeed 480i), not BD of course.  A transport that sends 480i native to a scaler is a good thing.

Alan, do you already have this processor?  If so, what did you get?

I can't tell from your response, but you do know that Blu is 1080p24hz native on the disk right?  With a Blu disk you don't want to be touching that with ANY scaler (unless you need to go down).

It's a Gennum VXP.  It's actually built into my Anthem D2 processor.  My current DVD player will output 480p.  With that I am able to take advantage of the scalling capabilities of the chip but not de-interlacing.  It needs a raw 480i for that.

I haven't done much looking around yet but I did see a Denon machine that will support 480i HDMI.  I'm sure they have that feature for use with outboard processors.  It's more of a high-end machine and didnt like the price.

Why not just buy a PS3 and then buy a cheaper DVD player that will support 480i?

You don't NEED (or even want) the blu player to support 480i for the actual HD content.  The PS3+DVD player would probably be much cheaper than any future blu player with that feature and is at least as upgradable (if not more).

Agreed.  I use a $169 Oppo 980 for 480i needs (and mch hi-rez), and a Sammy 1400 for BD.
