Yesterday's email contained an announcement of an update to the update :)  Haven't tried it yet, but hope to soon.

So this experiment piqued my interest and I thought I would try a behringer deq2496. It seemed a great bang for the buck because moving up to a better mic I would need some kind of preamp with phantom power, and didn't really find any phantom power mic preamp for very much less!  So I "bought it now" on ebay. It was a "demo" DEQ2496 that was coming from a pro sound shop somewhere in kansas for $165. They said 100% tested and operational.  Luckily same day I received the mic and mic cable and 1/4 to rca converter plugs from parts express for the aux outputs. Hooked it up, went through resetting the configurations, when the thing started crapping out. The screen faded then came back on, then some lights started randomly lighting, then reboot. So I persisted, and got it to the point that I could get some measurements, but it wouldn't stay running very long. Clicks and buzzes. So I told them I needed to return it and they agreed to that, but they are kind of incredulous that it wasn't working, or the box wasn't damaged in shipping...
Any suggestions?

The program is not compatible with the DEQ2496 yet. I have one too and noticed no mention of it in the REW user manual so I checked the forum and, while there seems to be an attempt to get a hold of one to add support to it, that has not happened yet.

I read about that too, and what I took away from is basically any correction you come up with from the REW can be created in the deq2496. Just is a manual process. From what I saw, when I looked at one, its very quick and easy to dial that in on the unit manually.

I guess what I was asking as far as suggestions is whether I should get another deq2496, given reliability concerns costs, etc, or if there was something better/cheaper out there that provides phantom power for mic and can run the test signals to the amplifier instead of my soundcard dac...

I've had mine for a few years now with out any problems. I thought I had a problem with it shortly after buying it, though. The thing would start turning off and on by itself and I ended up calling  Behringer customer service to arrange to have it sent back until I figured out that an aftermarket power cord I was using was a tighter fit than the stock cord and I didn't have it fully plugged in.
The question comes up now and then about the reliability of the Behringer and most people seem to have pretty good luck with them.

So I had just dropped off the deq at the ups store to ship back to the seller and was looking at the forum here on my smartphone, when I read the last post... and lo and behold i thought, well I didn't use the stock cord either! Maybe that was the problem, it wasn't getting a solid connection maybe.... So I drove back to the UPS place and convinced the lady to cancel the shipment, got my refund and drove home.

Eagerly I reconnect everything -this time with the cord they sent, and power it up. Everything was good for about 5 min. Then it started doing the same ol' crap. I don't think that was the stock cord either, it looked brand new. But there wasn't anyway this thing wasn't seated well in the power receptacle...
So back it goes tomorrow.

Man I really thought it was going to work!

Thanks for sharing you experience though. I think I will buy a new one...
