you can show him this pair, f/s for even less, still not sold after two weeks:

Looks like there is some bargaining room there, Merle.  The only issue would be the re-sale market considering the size and weight.  2.3s driven with el34 amp sounded good.
re-sale market on these is awreddy in the tank - that's why these are still f/s.  besides, merle is not gonna be buying/selling any more, right?

i owned a pair of thiel 3.5's for many years - excellent sounding speakers...

if you wanted to give up 9hz, (-2db at 29hz, but an easier load on an amp), spend a bit more (around your original budget) & get a pair of thiel 3.6's - even better resolution.  but, the 3.5's are lacking resolution only in comparison; they are still quite highly resolving...

But he would buy at the bottom.  It's really the liquidity I am concerned about.

P. S.  Are you now ready to entertain curious guests?

i cannot imagine not always being able to sell thiel 3.5's in good shape for $500 - they really are nice speakers.  and they really are true full-range speakers.

re: curious guests, i really should now wait until it's a bit warmer - living in a single-room studio apartment really isn't all that conducive to having more than a coupla folks over at a time, unless they can escape to outside.      but, if you ever wanna stop by, gimme a pm...

there's changes brewing here speaker-wise - the killer coincident victory's will soon depart; i have been enjoying them immensely the past couple weeks.  but, the fact that they sound really quite similar to the piega p5 mkll ltd's i picked up from carlman a while back, means i am able to let them go w/o feeling too bad.  but, i will miss their 97db-efficient synergy w/single-ended low-power tube amps.  however, i traded them for another pair of highly efficient speakers - a pair of oris 150 horns/fostex drivers, mated to a pair of bass-bins made from klipsch lascalas, loaded w/15" fostex drivers.  plus a hypex amp & some cash.  so, after i sell the hypex amp, which i do not really need, i should be ok...

then, there's the pair of gemme audio tanto's that i sprung for; yust couldn't resist.   :green:

I have M60, QS4 and VP150 for my HT.  This is used to be my music systems too. However, i now have my own 2 channel systems, but i still keep Axiom. They are good speakers for the money. Aperion or Onix is worth to look at too.

Hey Doug, I got so tired of seeing the Thiel's on Audiogon every day with no one taking them I decided to give them a good home. I'll pick them up tomorrow!

hi merle,

cool!  i hope they work out for you!   :thumb:  my only recommendation is that you give them a good amp that outputs decent current.

best,

A little late in the game but for future reference there is a list of Axiom Owners who are more than willing to open their homes for an audition. there may be someone in your area that has the M80's so you could go over for a listen.

Here is a link to that list:

As someone who owns M80v2's and M3v2's I can say that I am very happy with their performance for music. I dont think they are "Bright" speakers, which is without a doubt the biggest complaint your going to hear about them. They are clean and forward sounding. If you like a laid back sort of muffled sound then they probably arent going to be the best choice. Out of the Axiom line the M22 is best matched with a subwoofer. Stand alone wise the M3 is the best bookshelf choice which usually falls in line with what most people will tell you.

Without a doubt they arent the best speakers money can buy but i have been very pleased. So much so that when My first set of M80's were put into action in a theater system for my parents I bought them again, In a nicer finish.
