For source components like a phonostage, set the volume to a nice listening level.  Then, lift the arm.  You should not hear anything except for maybe a faint hiss from your listening chair.  Ideally.

When I do this, I still have a mild-moderate hum.  Never been able to get rid of it.  Thought it might have been the Rega P3/wires.  Nope. Replaced it with a  VPI MKIV and tricked-out tonearm/wires.  Same.  Swapped out cables.  Nope.  Same.  Thought it was the Denon 103.  Nope.  Tried 3 different amps.  Nope.  Tried different phono-pre's and pre's.  Nope.  Hmmmmmmmm!! (pun intended)  I just wonder what else there is to try?  Anybody have thoughts?

Start with a minimal system.  Just amp and speakers, nothing else.  Hum?  Then start adding pieces, one at a time.  If hum, then likely magnetic field induced.  If buzz, then probably a missing ground connection.

Cool
I'm not so lucky with my 100db + Klipschorn bass bins. There is still low level hum  (little more in one channel that the other ). I used tube sockets with the screens ,took gray ground wire out of transformer  twisted filament wires etc . I guess most of reports on "dead quiet " comes from people using 89-90db speakers ;)
Maybe  the TVC as a pre is a cause although my other DIY pre (J-fet Borbely) -is dead quiet but has some issues with sibilants . I built my Cornet using Hammond (alu ) chassis (major PITA), dale 2W resistors , mika and A-note film/foil on RIAA , Hovland coupling caps (2uF on output ). The voltages are 5%-10% and filament little low 5.8V .Regards, L

Hello,

I also have the Cornet 2.  I have a 100 db speakers as well (Altec 604-8G on OB).    Hum was not an issue for me and it depends on what amp you use.  If it is a PP, then there should be no hum at all.  If DHT SET, then I can hear a low level hum when I place my ears close (4 inches) to the drivers but not at a foot or two feet from it.

Abe

Thanks Abe
I'm using DHT 45 SE with AC on filaments . They are not perfect but with J-Fet (SS) phono and Cinemag step-up the hum is barely evident close to the speakers. Not so with Cornet . I thought that those big 47nF A-Note caps in RIAA position pick-up something but I exchanged them for some Orange Drops PP without a change ,  except for the sound (a lot worse). It may be the wiring of the damn Rega RB1000 with integrated ground (the hum is more evident in one channel than the other) .I'll separate the ground this weekend. I hope it's not the transformer.
