Last night listening to my favorite vinyl on my AVA equipment was the final straw. Why must I suffer filament noise and then expect the music chain to be dead quite. I had had enough!

I was in the commercial lighting business for almost 30 years (floodlighting), having worked on such wonderful projects as the Statue of Liberty, the Space Shuttle launching pad and The Boston Gardens (Fleet Center) to name a few, how embarrassing to have friends come over and I have to kill the noisy damn dimmers.

The fact is all dimmers are not the same. The brand I had installed caused tremendous filament whip with about 50 to 60% dimming the loudest. This is also bad on the lamp filament as you can imagine.

The best brand of dimmer is Leviton, hands down but They are not available in my area. This morning I tried some Lutron dimmers (model TG-600PH-IV). Now it is totally dead quite! Dimmers offer an energy savings and also set the mood for listening. If any of you have had or are having a problem, this brand may be the answer for you. It is available at most local ACE hardware stores for about $19 each.

I assume you mean the filament whip in your house lighting Wayne, and that the audio equipment is not on that circuit. 

Would not make much difference with our preamps anyway as they have all regulated DC supplies to both filaments and each tube plate.

Yes, I mean the filament whip in the Par lamp(s) and I had 3 of them devils singing all the time. Thanks for the clarification, Frank. Nice wind today, huh!  And don't put dimmers on light switched outlets, then plug hifi stuff into that outlet! The motors in CD/DVD players with go bonkers!
