Considering purchasing used LRC... big difference between spiral and FST?

I found a good deal on the LRC.  Oddly enough, I do not currently own any VMPS speakers, but plan on eventually purchasing 4 626R's.  The only drawback is that this particular LRC has the TRT caps, but no FST (it has the spiral tweeter).  The seller tells me that the difference is insignificant, but I doubt this, especially because I plan on buying the 626's with the FST and worry about voice matching.  Any suggestions?

The FST is a "higher output" driver and does have a "slightly" different sound than the Spiral because of an also increased dispersion pattern.

You could take advantage of the 626jr special and get matching drivers in all 5 speakers.

Chances are if it is the spiral in the LRC it also has a different x-over from the panel to the tweeter (I can't recall what frequency that was, but it was not 6.9Khz as with the FST)  Seems to me it was somewhat higher.  That would also make the sonic signature slightly different.

I wouldn't be concerned about it for HT. I have an LRC and use the VMPS Tower IISE as fronts. The LRC has a different tweeter than the TII's, but it's not an issue, IMO.

Thanks for the advice... I ended up going with an LRC with Auricaps, FST, soundcoat, megawoofers, and piano black.  I'm trying to figure out the best way to position the center channel.  I have a front projection theater setup.  When I eventually get my 626's for the L/R channels, I plan to have them on 24" stands, putting the middle of the ribbons right at my 37" seated ear level.  What type of stand should I purchase for the LRC?  Do I want the ribbon on the LRC at the same height as the ones on my 626's?  Most of the pictures I have seen of center channels in a front projection setup, show a very short stand.  Do I do this and angle the LRC upwards towards my ears or do I mount it on a stand of equal height as the one used with the 626's?

I think part of the height issue for the center channel depends on the distance of your seating position to the speakers. I sit about 10 ft away and my center channel used to be positioned below ear level. Now the center channel is at ear level and, as a result, I can hear a slight improvement. The sound is a bit more seamless. However, if I sat farther back, I doubt I'd hear as much of a difference. But just from an aesthetics standpoint, your center channel can only go so high; otherwise, it will obscure your view of the screen. I suggest getting the center channel as close to ear level as possible. Tilting helps, but that's also dependent on seating distance.

Hi Jeff,

I have both an RM30 (horizontal) and an LRC for center duties with a front projection screen (120").

I made sure that the top of the LRC was "just" out of the projection beam and right below the screen.

Cool!  I plan on doing the exact same thing (I think the viewable area of the screen is a mere .5" above the top of the LRC).  Do you have any pictures of your setup?  My only regret is that with the piano black finish, I will have to put some type of fabric on top of the speaker to absorb potential light reflection (the bain of any front projector's existence!).

Yeah!  I love that about it

Almost as good as an RM40 center. aa

You might be surprised.

My L&R are GLOSS (very shiny) BLACK RM40jr's and are positioned the same way (close enough to the screen so that they are just "out" of the projector's beam, and not a reflection.

but if you do, take a tip from the screen manufacturers, and get a little black velor, or velvet to place on top.
