I don't think James wants the ftp site published here, but the link is available from the help page on the SP3 web access page.

The 2012.12 version is available from the "current" directory under SP3 firmware.

Got it. Thanks...

Is firmware 2012.12 good to go?  Has anyone upgraded without an error? Or might I experience problems if i try to upgrade?  I have enough problems...

PS. Does "ipad" include Android tablets?

Hi guys,

I thought that I would update you on something that I learnt about the SP3 today.

You can now (?) change the LED display to turn off after a given time, but more importantly ALL the led's including the source lights. If you were not aware this is achieved via the System > Misc > Disp and the pressing either the surround mode buttons or the volume wheel.

If you did know, then hey, why didn't you tell us !

Subject: Re: Questions about SP3 and BDP-2

Hi James,

I wanted to thank you again for all the time you spent answering my upfront questions about the SP3 and BDP-2.  I received the SP3 a couple weeks ago and have been thoroughly enjoying it.

The SP3 was an upgrade to my venerable Anthem AVM20, which was a piece that was highly regarded by the press and its owners when it was released 10+ years ago.  The primary reasons why I upgraded the Anthem was to gain HDMI functionality and the processing of HD multichannel codecs.

I knew to expect at least equal sound quality from the SP3, but I truly was surprised by the very noticeable increase in clarity and the reduction of noise.  Two things stood out.  First was how good of a job the DAC did on a complex acoustic guitar track that I have.  On all but the best systems, the notes are a jumbled mess, because the artist is so quick on the strings.  On the SP3, it was clear and musical, which puts the SP3 in the same league as Boulder.

Secondly was the sound of silence.  By that I mean, silent tracks were actually silent.  This is true of movies, music, and even streaming radio.

I am so impressed by the increased performance of my system by the SP3, that I am even considering a second, two channel Bryston system for my office.

Thank you again for your customer service, and I look forward to receiving the BDP-2 and adding it to my system.

Sincerely,

Anthony Barsoom

I have known, but thought everyone else owning a SP3 knows that, so ...

And - It's a great feature!

SP3 Firmware update

My link to "ftp link below" on the SP3 Help page does not work.  Error message is "550 /pub/fw/sp3/: No such file or directory."  As a retail customer, am I not supposed to be doing this?  Or is there something else going on?  Any info would be gratefully appreciated. Cheers.

Found it.  a 1495 kb .bin file with a date of 11/29.

Should work by typing the IP address into the Safari browser.

Thanks for the quick response James.
The default IP 169.254.1.1 works only via IE on my wired PC to the router.

I try entering the above via Safari on my iPad and it tells me cannot open page because the server stopped responding.

What is SP3 Rev 2.0?

When we make changes for whatever reasons we rename things using Rev numbers.

Out of interest James, do you have any details on the changes? My SP3 runs very hot, are you addressing issues like that?

Cheers

I think the SP3 is hot due to the 24V and 15V analog voltage regulators which, unlike switching power supplies, tend to run really hot. Also, these regulators are heat sinked via the power supply chassis to the outer case, which therefore does get pretty hot.

It is hotter than the 9BSST but that has real aluminum heatsinks, and many of them....

James can correct me, but I think the changes are mainly in some of the connectors and the Ethernet part of the IO daughter card, but since the USB chip is still the PCM2707 no 192/24 Asynchronous mode (yet).
