2 questions.

On the subwoofer settings, what does in2Bypass do?

Secondly I seem to have found an anomaly for where there are 2 surround back speakers, at least on our unit. Now I spoke to Mike this morning who has passed this along but I was wondering if someone can test it.

I have found that when you run the test tone on the surround back left or surround back right channel, it comes through both the surround back channels. In addition to this, we have an SACD player connected to the 7.1 Bypass inputs. When the Surround back left input gets a signal, the same signal is output on the surround back right channel as well. Vice versa when there is a signal on the surround back left channel as well.

In other words, the processor seems to be treating the 2 surround back channels as one. So a signal through either, is being output through both. I have the latest 92c firmware loaded.

Lastly, the speaker settings and sizes seem to need to be setup separately for each input, rather than globally. Is this intended?

Many thanks,
Adam

Hi Adam

Yes each input can be set differently for speakers and levels etc.

I assume you have selected 2 speakers for the Back channels?

Yup, set to 2 small. It is quite odd behaviour that I am seeing.

Hi

I just tested mine and it is 92c and no issues.

Send me an email I will send you the software file I am using - jamestanner@bryston.com

Hmmm, then something unusual seems to be happening to cause that to happen. The 7.1 bypass input, is that basically a straight signal path from the input to the output, via a volume control? If so, then it would suggest that somehow the signal path of the 2 surround back channels has been linked somehow - given we get the behaviour on that input as well as the test tone.

So if you run the internal pink noise the back channels behave OK?

It is just the 7.1 passthrough?

No, it all sources it seems. The pink noise did exactly the same thing which made me wonder if there is a potential hardware issue. Also on ProLogicIIx the rear 2 channels seem to produce exactly the same output - although it can be hard to tell depending on the source.

I have also wondered if it could be a DSP issue. I am using firmware 92c which was reflashed twice this morning, as the firmware on it was a quite a few versions older (87).

Updated once, no luck - same issue. Giving it another shot to see how it goes.

It seems like there is something strange going on - I will discuss with engineering tomorrow for you.

Still no luck. Out of interest, how do you restore the unit to factory defaults? I want to see if that might help

Not sure on that Adam - have to ask engineering. I just ran my pink noise again and all is well so something is up with that unit. Where did you purchase it?

Through the official dealer here in Melbourne. As far as I know, it is the only black SP3 in Aus at the moment.

It was the unit at the hifi show here. We had a chat with Brian about it actually.

Thanks James. For the most part I have addressed each of the other queries I made in the couple of emails to you guys. The only outstanding issue really left is the sound duplicated across the surround back channels. Disregarding that, the SP3 does seem to be outstanding.

Thanks Adam - I probably get an email a week now from customers who tell me the more they listen the more our Audio First approach works :thumb:

It is interesting you mentioned that. We had a good chat with Brian about that when he was here and it was a large factor in the decision to upgrade from the existing processor which frankly tried to do too much and was a disappointment. Definitely liking the Bryston approach.

On the subwoofer settings, what does in2Bypass do?

When ON:  DSP will extract bass and pass it to Subwoofer output, even though the L and R channels are bypassing the DSP entirely, going straight input to output (through the volume controller).  If this option is OFF then subwoofer output would not be active in Bypass 2.
