Hi there.

Hope I'm posting this in the correct area (if not, please feel free to move it)

My Usher speakers have a lower sealed cavity that can be filled to add weight and potentially improve the bass.

Has anyone had any experience with this - and, do you have any suggestions on what to fill it with?

Thanks........

Popcorn!  It won't affect the sound too much and it's great for a mid-session snack.

Actually, I think "lead shot" would be the stock answer here.

You could also use sand, but make sure it's nice and dry.

Or... go to Walmart and get lots of BB's.

What I have used in these speakers is the Micro Bearing Fill from Star Sound. What I found worked best was a 1/2" think layer. To do this, you would fill some proper sized zip-lock bags. Use two or three bags as the Micro Bearing Fill is like metal dust.

BB's from Walmart eh  - That actually sounds like the easiest to work with. Has anyone here tried it?

Hi satfrat. How long have you had the Alan Maher PE IV in your system? Did you add it last? Where did you put it? What did it do for the sound? I have one on order! Thanks.

I just purchased a pair of Usher CP-6311 and for the life of me can't figure out how to remove the back panel to fill them with sand/lead/popcorn/etc.  I've removed the 6 screws, and have tried prying the back plate off, but I'm afraid I'm going to break something or scratch the finish.  Is there a trick to this?  Did the previous owner glue the back plate on there?  Any advice would be appreciated.

Hello Johsti,
The panel should come off once the screws are removed. It could just be the gasket sticking?

I had a lot of trouble too. It's a very tight fit. Be careful, as it appears to be just made of compressed paper. I ended up using a very tiny flat head screw driver to pry out the cover (working it out a bit at a time from a few different spots on the cover).

Good luck

I had no luck with the screwdriver, but I did manage to get the back plates off.  I used a drywall anchor in one of the screw holes, and carefully tightened the screw to expand the anchor.  I then pulled on the screw and the plate popped off.

There isn't very much room in there.  I was able to get about 9 pounds of sand in each cavity.  Does that sound about right?  I put the sand in plastic bags rather than dumping it in.

I had the pleasure of spending some time with Paul Chen from Usher at RMAF 2006.

I told Paul that I had 25 pounds of led shot, in bags, in each of my CP-6391's.
In Paul’s opinion that is not enough.  He recommends filling the compartments to capacity with LOOSE led shot for optimum performance.  He stressed the point that bagged shot is considerably less effective then loose shot.

The 6391’s should hold about 50 pounds of loose shot.
He recommends tilting the speaker forward when loading the shot.
This will allow you to get more shot into the compartment.

I considered using micro bearings but the delta in cost is significant so I went with led.
Obviously the best thing to do is experiment to see what sounds best to you.

Best of luck,
Jeff
