Just as a little update, I took some time away from other projects today to look over DOS's two SBs.

Both are able to be revived. In fact one is up and running right now, playing Ga Ga Ga Ga as I type.

DOS managed to lift the traces from about four leads to the DAC chip in an attempt to upgrade to the KE version.

The KE chip is the exact same chip as the 1748 used in the early SB, except the KE was tested. The stock chip may meet or even exceed the tests, but the labor wasn't spent to hook it up to the test gear.

Anyway, I did have some KE versions on hand. I used some 24 awg, lacquered, Cardas, solid core copper wire to replace the traces and run to the chip leads. I also ended up replacing the DAC chip supply caps and ran the output of the DAC chip direct to DOS supplied BlackGates to the Cardas jacks.

For any who would attempt to work on the small surface mount parts on a SB3, the BEST thing to get would be a magnifying lamp to be abel to see exactly what you are doing. A temp controlled soldering station is another good thing to have.

DOS' 2nd SB is able to be brought back to life, as well. SO he will get two working SB's back. I do hope he will be a bit more careful about DIY projects in the future. Having and using proper tools is a big ingredient to a successful completion of a mod. I would also suggest some practice in removing and installing SM parts on a scrap board before you work on something that could cost you a bit of money if you make a mistake.

I think that it is very cool that you took the time from your very busy business to help DOS out. Kudos to you.

Hi DOS, sorry to hear about your mishap with the SB3. So far I have not tried to mod any of mine although I have an RWA modded SB3.

Here is a suggestion: if you have no other options, I may be interested in one of your SB3 if the display is still good. My SB3 has a display problem after a lightning strike last year.

Good luck with sorting this out properly though. Having at least one SB3 working right is much preferred!

Well if both end up working, you want a full working SB3, with a good screen, Ferdi?

Wayne described some of the stuff to me in a PM, he really went to town, and has to be really dang good at what he does!

I had trouble getting good angles when working to replace the DAC. That is why I tried the flood method which ended up in the mess with lifted traces. With small solder, a magnifing glass on an arm, and maybe removing some stuff in the way of the work space (but put back I think, might need two soldering irons to move one capacitor in the way), it would be much easier. Also a steady hand, my hands seem to be bad for this work as compared to my other work from a year ago and some other times.

Oh and heed warning to the lead free solder techniques and that Wayne had to change how he went about working on these when the new ones came out.

I will be saying this for awhile, Thank you again Wayne.
