I replaced the output capacitors of 5uF p-i-o's.

I never took notice before the swap if there is supposed to be a 90 second delay after powering on.

It sounds like a relay clicks on after 90 seconds and then I get music output.
Possibly for DC offset protection?

Anyone else notice this?

My DAC-60 has a pretty lengthy delay - I have never timed it, so I can't say exactly how long it is, but it is certainly more than a minute, and does make a very audible "click" when the delay is over.

Yeah - it's unfortunate but normal. I initially thought that I had a bad unit but after speaking with Danny, that's just the way they are...

Hey guys. It has a tube output stage. The delay is to let the tubes have time to warm up before opperation. This is typical with any tube output stage, pre-amp, or amp.

According to the manual, it's a full 2 minutes. Then the muting relay throws and you have music.
And Danny has the reason-tubes need time to warm and stabalize.

The stage 1 mod takes it up quite a bit.

The stage 2 mod is nearly ready for release. It really brings the detail levels to a new level. I have most of the Stage 2 mod currently in mine and it really sounds outstanding. I am loving it.

I have a GR modified stage 1 unit and it is simply superb sounding. It does take a bit to turn on with its internal delay and that is totally normal- dont want to wast those NOS tubes! Also got to hear the Stage one and one of Dannys Beta Stage 2 units in his listening room. The stage 2 is more focused and transparent. The stage 1 is manditory for this DAC and is an absolute steal! You can put this DAC up against many of the best Dacs and CD players without reservation. Very nice

I've changed out coupling caps and power supply caps and diodes and grounding caps for the dac chip and opamps, (when applicable), on a couple of other cd players, but they still don't compare to a pcm1730 chip based dac that my friend runs. I'd love to be able to mod the 60 and get close.
I am pushing him harder to build me one though.

Has anyone tried this?

I know a lot of people have added the cathode by-pass caps.  But all that does is raise your gain to 28 (from 16.5.)  It will makes no sense on its own unless you have low gain in your amp.   

The design issue with the DAC-60 is the high loading of the PCM1704 with the 220 ohm I/V resistor.   What this guy did is lower this I/V to 50 ohm.  You still get the same Vout-rms because he added the cathode by-pass caps.  Also there is an improved filter which is a copy of what Hagerman uses on the Chime DAC (also PCM1704.)

I am debating doing this or adding a pair of Sowter (1:18) transformers with a 10 ohm I/V.  This should have better resolution than the above and no question of too much I/V loading.  But it will set me back $220 and I have never heard a transformer I/V.  Some reports like it others don't.

Lastly does anyone have experience making the CRC a CLC ?  I don't know the formula's to calculate whether this is really appropriate or for show.
