New GR-T3 tweeters are in here.
« on: 5 Jan 2008, 09:35 pm »

I just wanted to let you guys know that am onto the next generation of tweeters now. There were a few minor changes made to this version to make it a little better than the one before it.

So far I have updated all of my kits that used the GR-T2 to the GR-T3 tweeters except for the A/V-2 model. So any A/V series kits ordered from now on are getting the latest updated tweeters and crossover designs.

So Danny, what does the big drop in resonance mean to us amateur speaker designers?  Can we ignore the old rule of thumb about crossing at least 2x the resonance frequency?  If so, what is the lowest you would cross this?  Does the lower amount of ferro fluid significantly affect power handling?

Danny,

Another question. Since you have heard a TON of tweeters out there, can you give us an idea of how this T3 tweeter compares to some of the megabuck soft domes - Scan Speak 9500 or the 9900 revelator series, or Seas Crescendo or Excel series? Is it more in line with the old Vifa D27 or better. Your T1-T3 series of tweeters faceplate look a lot like the Vifa D27TG.

I realize your NeO3's compete with the best soft domes. And it is a bargain as well.

Thanks,
Anand.

It can hit its resonance and you won't know it. It hits it real softly and doesn't ring.

No, you can cross a couple of hundred Hz off of it if you do it step enough.

I crossed them at 2kHz and it sounded really good.

It can if they are played hard over a long period. I have yet to see any of our tweeters die from too much power though.

I've done designs with all of those tweeters and found that the type of cap used can make just about as much difference as the difference between some of those tweeters.

I once compared our GR-T2 with a 9900 Scan Speak. I liked the Scan Speak better. It was clearly a little better across the board. But when I put an Axon poly cap on the Scan Speak and put a Sonicap on the GR-T2 it made it a pretty tough call.

How many other tweeters out there have been pre-tested and measured, come with their own response curve, and are sold in matched pairs for $29 a piece?  :thumb:

The Neo's are on a different level. They edge all of those out in my book.

Agreed. Well, North Creek does have a few more of the North D25-06 tweeters at $36/pair (http://www.northcreekmusic.com/Drivers/NorthD25.pdf). But the T3's are cheaper!

That's why your kits with the Neo3's are a real bargain. I was quite surprised with the high end response of the OB-5's when I listened to them at Denny's place. In fact, everything above 2K on those designs using the Neo3's are basically the Neo3's singing!  :thumb: The most "dynamic" tweeter I've heard yet.

Anand.

Hey Danny, I thought you were here in Vegas at CES?  I finally have some show time and am headed to the Venetian.  Do you have any designs on display there?

I decided that since I didn't HAVE to be there I could skip it this year. Plus I am just getting over being sick and didn't feel like getting something else so soon. Half the people I know come back from CES sick every year, and I didn't want to be one of them.

There are some speakers floating around there that I designed networks for though (maybe 4 or 5 different places).

Danny,

Any possibility of using these to upgrade the tweeters in my AV123 X-cs's? I haven't touched the XO's yet and if the new tweeter will work that would be a perfect time to update the crossovers.

This tweeter won't fit that hole, but AV123 is working on getting some custom face plates that will fit the old hole but also fit the new tweeter used in the new Encore version. That is a REALLY good soft dome tweeter.

I think they are going to offer the tweeter and new networks for those wishing to upgrade. So you may be in luck here pretty soon.
