The price increase was a result of Apple requiring that it had to be packaged with a remote.
I still see this as a pretty good deal, because when I bought an Apple remote for the one my
daughter lost for my Apple TV, it was 55 bucks....

Origninally, it was not going to be bundled with a remote.

It is pretty awesome and mating it with the Channel Islands DAC it the most musical
Digital sound I've ever heard for a thousand bucks.  Just killer!

There is no internal DAC on the 170. This is actually a good thing in my opinion.

So, what's the L/R RCA for? I guess it should somehow process the signal and send it to the amp?  If it's not , i think it's good thing too since i want everything is pure....:)

These should be for the audio/video output and use the internal iPod DAC.

Yes there is an IR port in the front...

the rca jacks on the back are in case you don't have a dac, you can
just use it as a regular dock.  It does sound better than the straight
apple dock....

Thanks. Can't wait to read the review.

Sounds like it's better solution than modding the Ipod.

Sorry, I don't understand the excitement. We have one group of audiophiles that bitch that there isn't enough dots and dashes to make believable audiophile sound, and then we have another group that is rejoicing that a CD player manufacturer decided to make an ipod doc. It's all about sales, guys. Hate to piss on your parade but there is no big deal here.

Sorry but I beg to differ.

The iPod running uncompressed or lossless with a good DAC is quite
outstanding.

It's a way better solution than modding an iPod, because the sound
is better and it retains all of the original functionality of an iPod
for those who don't want to lose it.

If you haven't heard it, you can't comment.  I love it and I bought
six of them, one for each of our reviewers to use as a source component.

Will I get rid of my Naim 555?  Nope, it's still better, but this is quite
good.  And I can't put my 555 in the glovebox of my car.

It's not lossless. It's still compressed music.

Only if you choose to save compressed music to the disc.  Presumably most audiophiles would choose WAV for ALAC, which are true lossless.

Almost no one does this. That's the purpose of an Ipod device.

I disagree. Many of us do this. A 160 gb iPod full of AIFF uncompressed music in combination with the iTransport is fabulous.

Once the iPod got a larger capacity, it's "purpose" changed for many....

Why keep arguing about something you haven't experienced?  If you
don't want one, don't buy it.  If it doesn't fit your needs it isn't for you.

Not everyone wants a squeezebox or a transporter. I've had em, don't
like em at all.  But I've told a whole bunch of my friends about them
and for many it's the perfect device.  That doesn't mean it's good or
bad because it doesn't fit my needs.

Not everyone wants a McIntosh MS750, but just try and sell a McIntosh
guy something else.  It also has a very useful set of features.

It's about investigation.

You can argue all day whether you like/want it or not, but it works
very well and sounds fantastic.

LOSSLESS is lossless.
Compression does not mean something is lost.

I for one use my iPod almost exclusivley with lossless FLAC files.

I just built one of these.  1.3TB RAID-5. It has an iTunes and Media Server built into its control panel accessible with any web browser.
Truly lossless audio needs WAY MORE than 160GB’s and this is good for all sorts of network storage and archiving with data protection/redundancy.

It’s very quite too, only as loud as the hard drives. Put this in a closet, near your router or broadband modem.

I’d rather put a small, inexpensive laptop on my rack of audio gear and use a USB/I2C /DAC before my preamp.  My Plasma (and many newer models) have DVI and HDMI inputs supporting a wide variety of resolutions making it easy to use as a computer monitor too. So many ways to make it work.

I’ve been looking at the Wadia as well as the Arcam that incoporiates a high quality buffer stage for the analog output from the iPod, further enhancing the audio and takgin advantage of the quality sound of the Wolfson DAC’s.

Agree.  160GB is more than enough for me to store WAV or FLAC . I postpone buying Ipod for so long because i wait for bigger size and something like Wadia 170.   These would  be a perfect pair for me.

Do you plan to take jitter measurements on the Wadia and compare them to jitter measurements from the SD SB3, Transporter and Duet's digital outputs?

...If the Wadia Transporter sounds that good - it would be worth getting multiple ipods (as Vinnie said) - say one each for Classical, Jazz, Pop/World etc. and then take your ipod on the go and when you bring it back - just plug it in for the best sound quality. I think I may still carrie my iMod to work ;)
howto?: Imod->HeadRoom amp->balanced headphone .
Would the Wadia iTransport supports my 5.5th gen iMod? It is really a big disadvantage that the HeadRoom BALANCED Home headphone amp doesn't accept analog input when you want to use a BALANCED headphone!

Signature:
* Akg K1k->ACI Tital XL subwoofer->Red Wine Audio Signature 30.2->Stello DA220 Mk II DAC->Squeezebox Duet;
* balanced Grado SR225->Headroom Home Balanced->Alo Audio Vcap->RWA iMod;
