I did the same two downloads and it took me 4 hours to get the 24//96 wave file downloaded.

As M. Jagger once sang, "Please allow me to introduce myself"... so here I am Transported in a very real sense.

Not exactly the devil, mind you, but a bit of an audio fiend with a long and pointed tail nonetheless.

Thanks to the low level internet buzz and this forum in general, (and to the patient responses to my never ending questions to Dan and David [rydenfan] in particular), I have today pulled the trigger on ordering my MW TP.

OK, so the migration from traditional rotating media to this new high holy ground of audio nirvana, for me, is about to begin.  Being a somewhat computer literate noob with an ever evolving sense of self respect and decorum, I have already availed myself of x,000 assorted Google searches and somewhat fewer downloads of software designed to help me convert my media into lossless computer files.  I have actually got some of this stuff, however unpredictably, to work.  Trouble is I haven't yet arrived at the best strategy with which to assign  nomenclature for these files for consistent retrieval that is logical and convenient. Anyone here with advice as to how best to order the config of EAC, dbPowerAmp, et.al., from the git go for access that is so intuitively consistent my wife can do it?  Also, is anyone in these parts yet availed themselves of the Duet Controller for use with the TP?  Opinions?

Fair warning:  once these mysteries are revealed I'll likely next start in with tube questions.  5U4G, GZ32, 6H30... sheesh.

Thanks for compassion and your kind responses,

Nick

way cool stuff!!!  If all record companies would only realize the butt load they could earn...

PS: track 9 in particular is stunning... typical Reznor excellence...

Nick,
WELCOME!!!

Well, since I was the one who intro'd this evil to David (rydenfan) I guess I'm part to blame for your giving in to temptations.  GOOD JOB!!!  You'll enjoy it.   :thumb:

You won't regret it.  I've had mine for about two weeks now and it is bizarre to think I once used a CD player or a stand-alone DAC...

I wish it were not a bit torrent. I never seem to be able to get them to work correctly. I wish it were just a download.  :?

Nick,
Welcome to the forum, I'm sure you'll have hours of enjoyment with the TP.
With regard to EAC, I use this program because it was the first one I used and never migrated to other programs - it works great for me, but I'm sure the others work fine.  Recently I setup EAC on a media server and just followed the guides on the Slim Devices Wiki:

http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/BeginnersGuide

http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/BeginnersGuideToRipping

Lots of good links here to get you started.

As the others have said, welcome Nick (though you did post - once - 3.5 years ago :o) and welcome to the ModWright Transporter Club.  FWIW, Ted is the ModWright Transporter Club's president, David is his VP and (I think) Frank S. is Sergeant at Arms.  Should you decide to pursue full-fledged membership, I suggest approaching Ted or David about initiation.  It's brutal, but worth it IMHO.

I'm a newbie to the MW Transporter myself (it arrived 2 weeks ago Friday), but HDD-based music has been my one and only system source for going on 3 years now, so hopefully I can provide some assistance.

EAC works great; I used it for a year before changing programs.  However, as someone new to ripping, you may find Easy CD-DA Extractor much more to your liking.  It's much easier to set-up than EAC, rips several times faster and according to my and other's comparisons, rips just as accurately.  It was literally the only program I hated giving up when I purchased my first Mac nearly 2 years ago.

It isn't free, but I considered it a small investment in comparison to the hundreds of CDs and equipment I own.  I figured if I couldn't afford $30 to ensure my music was properly ripped, I should probably stick with a conventional arrangement.

While we're on the subject of ripping, is there a program for Mac that rips as well as EAC?

XLD is faster, It uses more than 1 processor. So if you have a Quad it will convert 4 songs at a time.

Choices choices.  Thanks for posting them both.  Is one of them "better" from a strictly quality perspective?  I'm converting to FLAC.

I've skipped the whole lossless thing and went straight to wave and LAME 320... if interested you can read my article on LAME @ PFO...

MAX is an excellent program as well as the accompanying TAG for it. Also, they recently added a script for MAX that allows you to pull all of the tagging information from itunes, this has been a great little tool.

I used MAX for a year after moving to Mac, but I found this about 6 months ago and haven't use anything else since.  It's more involved, but I feel I have a bit more control over the process.

FWIW, I spoke with George Louis of RealityCheck™ CD Duplicator fame/infamy a couple of days ago, an audiophile who's absolutely rabid about phase inversion and other subtle and not-so-subtle anomalies inherent in the CD manufacturing and playback processes.  He has a product called Ultra Bit Platinum CD Treatment, something Ed Shilling (The Horn Shop) has raved about and that is rumored to make CDs ripped to memory sound better.  I'll probably give it a try sometime soon, but in the meantime I treat CDs with Shine-Ola before ripping.  I don't know if it helps or not, but I'm relatively certain it doesn't hurt.

Last night I ripped the 2-CD Bach: 6 Suites for Cello and could see there were no errors in any of the 36 ripped tracks, a welcome (albeit uncommon) occurrence.

This reminds me of a question I've had;

I also use shineola on everything I burn.  I've read, and experienced, that a 2nd or 3rd generation "audiohile" copy method (from hard drive to good quality cdr, also shineola'd, and repeated +/-twice using a slow burn plextor or similar) maximizes the sound quality to be extracted from the silver discs.  My question is, in theory, should the 3rd gen/best sounding burned cdr be backed up again on my hard drive to replace the 1st gen files?  Should this 3rd gen cdr produce better sounding files for/from my HD?  Or are the 0's & 1's sound quality equal on the hard drive when played by through my TP?

Thx,
KM

Danny,
I know your article says you need to rerip to a cdr in wav format to compare, but I don't understand why a similar or even closer compare would be, through a Modwright Transporter (see, not totally a thread hijack.. :) ) comparing the original wav rip to the Lame 320 conversion, converted back to wav (say AbbeyRoad.wav vs AbbeyRoadLame.wav ).  The controls are the same, same hard drive, same processor, same streaming unit, etc.  Are you willing to accept a compare of this type (assuming the listener doesn't know which one we've picked in Squeeze Center)?  I'm intrigued, especially for those bright early cd rips.  I'm thinking of installing Inguz plug-in just to try tone controls to flavor or tame some bright rock compressed files, but also open to your findings.  I'm worried the Inguz plug-in will add too much noise/distortion to be worth it.  Dunno.

(Dan W, if this is too hijacked, I'll move it to a new topic in the pc forum......since DU crowned me President of the Modwright TP Club  I should be a leader and follow the forum rules... :D  )
