Thanks for the offer, but I already bought some RCA Cleartop 6CG7's. Are you not using them? What current tube are you using? I think it would be interesting for us to compile a list of what each of us are using.

Yes, I LOVE the Lessloss PC on the Modwright Transporter (the 36.5 then gets the Black Sand Violet Z1).  I switched the two for awhile but like the Lessloss's smooth yet detailed high bandwidth sound on the source.  If I had two, the 36.5 would be next.

BTW, David (rydenfan) and I are comparing notes and coming up with the same conclusions:
We love the GZ32 and/or 5AR4 over the 5U4G(B) as a rectifier, and with the GZ32 find the Sovtek 6N1P's to be slightly forward in the midrange, and somewhat fatiguing vs. 6BQ7's (or David's fave the RCA clear top 6CG7's).  I have a couple pair of 6CG7's but had only tried the inexpensive Electro-Harmonix (good, not great).  Dan sent me long ago a set of used ugly-looking Zenith 6CG7's which I'll listen to tonight...but am ordering a pair of RCA clear tops ($48/matched pair) to mimic David's setup.  Will report back.

Tubes
I've settled on the GZ32/6BQ7 combo as my favourite, with the 5AR4/6N1P second.
The 6BQ7's are cryoed, as I haven't tried a non-cryoed pair I cannot comment on the value of cryoing or not.
Both 6FQ7's & 6H30's don't work for me in my system.

The Transporter Owners Guide indicates the analog output can be attenuated for the RCA outputs.  After opening up my Transporter it appears this ability is bypassed going through the new RCA connectors.  Am I looking at this correctly?

You are correct.  In the interest of preserving sonic purity, we bypassed the attenuator network.  You can always attenuate the signal via digital volume control to a certain degree without compromising resolution, assuming you are using a preamp.  Otherwise, you have the full volume range to control volume to amp(s).  Some have used in-line attenuators at the amp inputs to reduce the signal level also, with good success.

As Ted indicates he and I have been discussing this as of late. I am currently using a 1950's Mullard fat base 5AR4 with the RCA Cleartop 6CQ7's. This is far and away my favorite combination. Once I established the 5AR4 as my favorite Recitifer for its clarity and dynamic headroom, I began comparing signal tubes. I first put in the 6BQ7's and they were not for me. I did a lot of A/B comparisons between the 6N1P's and the 6CQ7's. The 6N1P is a considerably louder tube so level matching help my evaluation.  The 6N1P has a very forward midrange which as first can be very compelling; however, I found it to be somewhat fatiguing and harsh. The 6CG7's have excellent detail and clarity and all instruments seemed more in their proper place. I also gained a more holographic imaging. For me, this the most detailed and transparent setup with amazing clarity. Of ocurse YMMV 


With all of that being said, I will be trying a few different things once some new tubes arrive. I will be taking the Mullard 5AR4 and putting into the 36.5 to replace the stock 5AR4. I will then place a Mullard GZ32 (very, very similar to the 5AR4/GZ34) into the TP. Also, I found an extremely rare pair of the original production (not the re-issues) 6H30 DR's. Ultimately these will replace the stock 6H30's in my 36.5, but I will first try them in the TP to see what I experience with them in comparison to the sound I have today.

I too am VERY happy with the LessLoss PC. It is very detailed and smooth, I still feel like there might be a tough of loss in the lowest bass but am not positive yet. My Synergistic Tesla T2 will be showing up this week for my 36.5 and once that is integrated into my system, I will compare the LessLoss to the Black Sand Violet Z1 on the TP.

I've found that the best way for me is to leave the different combo's in for a few weeks and see how they fare.  In the past I've tube rolled and heard a difference with new tubes which sounds 'better' but longer listening reveals that I was reacting to a diiference in tonal quality rather than an improvement that I could live with.
Interested to hear your feedback on the 6H30's in the TP David.

These are very rare and the guy who sold them to me would prefer to keep them than sell them. I can squeeze another 2 or 3 pairs out of him so I like them and someone else want them. They are not cheap though, $250 for the pair.

I'm currently using an Acoustic Zen Tsunami on my TP, I'll compare the LessLoss against it.

David said his were the originals and sonically superior to what's commonly out there as 6H30 DR's (a reintroduction or spinoff/copy), but that's all I know.  Certainly for half the price the Connexion ones would be the option, if they are sonically equivalent...I'll let David answer this better.

I don't have Silver Refs any more, but I'm planning to use a Black Sands Statement One with mine.  Based on my experience using them with sources and amps, I doubt I'll care to go looking for a better sounding PC, and the odds are excellent you'll feel the same way about the Silver Refs, Ken.
