I absolutely agree with you. I myself have two computer one for audio and one for the rest. I am just saying the issues are completely avoidable by not using one trick ponies.

1) I believe that ethernet is subtly better than WiFi sonically, but it is VERY close. The real benefit of hard-wiring is that you don't have ANY dropouts due to network wifi interference, etc. I have a Super G router, not an 'N' type. The N type router may make this a moot point.

2) Thank you Srajan for sharing your experiences with everyone as there is SOMEWHAT of a technical hurdle with this technology, but once you get past that, it is simply such a pleasure to be able to access your music in this way.

There is no problem using your daily computer as your music server as well. Just get an external HD for your music files.
Even with my old E-Mac all I had to do was put in some more memory. I have never had a problem.
It sounds like the music vault is more problematic and more expensive, not a good combo

re wi-fi V wired ethernet there should be no difference. If one hears a difference it is likely placebo and one should do a blind test to rule out placebo. Research the slim forums to learn more about this.

I stumbled across this today and thought some people may be interested? It looks to be a ripping service where you can just send them all of your discs and they take care of everything for you. You tell them what format and tagging, etc. You can supply your own hard-drive or purchase one from them. It looks like they have a NAS coming as well. Certainly nice for people that have more money than they do time. They will even convert LP's and cassettes for you.

Heads up on TransNav controller issue:

Over the last week I've noticed that the TransNav controller on my TP is making a rattling sound. Checking out the Slim Devices forum it appears to be caused by frequent and unnecessary degaussing of the controller caused by FW40. I'll checkout the nightly updates to see if it's been corrected, but wanted to flag it up as an issue in case other owners have the same issue.

fresh in possession of my very own Truth TP, I am most impressed with Dan's work... especially considering I know the stock model all to well...

a few things...

1. I have done away with any sort of compression, ie. I am running only full wave files; the only exception are certain discs that I convert to LAME 320 mp3, as this conversion process for those specific discs improves the sound quality.

2. I am streaming via my Apple Airport Extreme...

howdy... I won't be reviewing the stock TP per-se; I'll spend most of the time in the Truth TP domain - I feel it eclipses the former by a considerable margin as to devote an entire review to it when the Truth TP is so much more...

Indeed. Tube rolling alone would fill a whole review and would be a fun angle once the modified Transporter's "standing in the community" had been established so people knew where, roughly, to place it. Seeing I had the unusual opportunity to have two digital machines in house which both had digital i/o ports, I felt I'd go there. I'm sure you'll come up with plenty of scenarios I didn't touch on. Which, as you said, is particularly apt with a piece this flexible

Plus, I've resisted the whole server thing for so long and never got on the SACD/DVD/A bandwagon either, I had to approach this from the pop-my-cherry angle while you're in far deeper with the subject...

I have a great deal of respect for Dan's work. But it would be great to see a comparison review between his Transporter and Alex's. Alex seems to be taking a different approach, but I think having the two of them in house would make for a great story!

Can the ModWright Transporter still be run off its xlr balanced outputs? Does the MW TP retain the benefits of its original balanced design and output after the transformation into the new tube output stage MW version?

Yes. It's the preferred connection for that reason.

I tend to prefer XLR as well; however, I will be running my Transporter via the RCA outs. I discovered a problem with an XLR connection on my SR Telsa Accelerator cable and after a few lengthy conversations with SR, I will now be running via RCA. I hope I like my decision

I run RCA as well, just because my Stealth Nanofiber RCA's are my best ic's and I use them here. If it were a coin flip, I'd use the XLR's.

As you know, I am of the same opinion. Interestingly, SR feels the opposite in their testing.
