I assume you mean the PGA2310?
Those are nice for remote control volume control, but unless one buys a pre-designed kit, implementing the 2310 would be something of a daunting task for the average DIYer.
Having just had a glance at the PGA2310 I concur - looks very impressive. However you would want to be building a full multi-source receiver to bother implementing it (in which case your microcontroller would operate the input select as well as controlling volume).
There are other devices around which have a 2 or 3 button interface, and these are within the realm of the general DIYer. Maxim's website lists several.
P.S. Can the bickering be pruned from the thread? I'm actually interested in this topic (although probably more the digital options available, rather than transformers).
