One of the ones that got away from me (I owned it as a kid) was

Manfred Mann's Earth Band - Solar Fire

And boy of boy, I loved it as a teen.  Looked and looked for it locally, never found it, so bought it off GEMM and wowie zowie!   Sounds as wonderful as I remembered it...

1973 was a BIG VINYL buyin' year for me.  I bought a ton of stuff that year.

About a year ago I was listening to NPR and they had a spot about "What a crappy year 1973 was for music" and they played stuff  like the Hawaii 5-0 theme, and Tie A Yellow Ribbon 'Round The Ole Oak Tree by Tony Orlando and Dawn, etc etc etc...

This really bothered me, because at the time I heard that show on NPR I thought...but wait...1973 had some GREAT stuff too!!!

This "Solar Fire" was one of them:  1973
Some more I have from '73 are:

T.Rex - TANX
Led Zeppelin - Houses Of The Holy
Jethro Tull - Passion Play
Aerosmith - Dream On
Steely Dan - Countdown to Ecstasy
Todd Rundgren - A Wizard, a True Star
Frank Zappa - Over-nite Sensation
Lynyrd Skynyrd - (pronounced 'lĕh-'nérd 'skin-'nérd)
Rolling Stones - Goats Head Soup
Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Emmerson Lake and Palmer - Brain Salad Surgery
Pink Floyd - The Dark Side of the Moon
Stevie Wonder - Innervisions
Herbie Hancock - Head Hunters
Alice Cooper - Billion Dollar Babies
Wings - Band on the Run

Seemed like a GREAT year for music to me!!!

Cheers!!!

I could go on for hours. I still love this music and it makes up the majority of what I still listen to, but I've learned to love jazz, classical, even some country. Most are from the late 60's and early 70's 'cuz that's when I began to have my own spending money from part-time jobs.  aa  Back then I would normally buy one or two albums a week.

Kansas, all titles up to Point of No Return
Weather Report, all titles up to Heavy Weather
Robin Trower, all the '70s titles
Jeff Beck, Blow by Blow
Traffic, all titles from the '60s and '70s
Pink Floyd, all titles and most individual works
Yes, all titles and most individual works
Gentle Giant, all titles
Led Zeppelin, all titles
Grateful Dead, all titles but I wish I had more of Dick's Picks
Santana, all of the early titles to about '78 or so
Uriah Heep, the first 5 or 6
The Allman Brothers Band, up to about '73
Marshall Tucker Band, the first 5 or 6
Charlie Daniels Band, the first 6 or 7
Wishbone Ash, first 4 or so
Fleetwood Mac, most all titles but the early stuff, up to Bare Trees is the best
Emerson, Lake & Palmer, all titles
King Crimson, most titles
Savoy Brown, Hellbound Train and Lookin In, but I'm searching for more of the early years

and it goes on and on and on. . .  :thumb:

Hello WGH...

I have the Great Majority of albums that I bought too!!  A few did get away, either lost in a move, and I did have a few that I know were stolen.  I was not one to write my name on the jacket or label (probably should have).

Another one I know I owned but is not present anymore is:

Spooky Tooth - The Last Puff

I will keep an eye out for your Henry Hawks LP.

And yes, we did wear some out too!  Some bought multiple times etc..

To Dan_ed:
Your picks sound great man!!!  Sounds like what I have a bunch of now, too.

I would add:

Little Feet
Roy Buchanan
Badfinger
Joan Armatrading
Traffic
(I have ALL the Savoy Brown...!!!)
Stephen Stills
Leon Russell
Jefferson Starship
Foghat
Grank Funk Railroad

Will second the nod for Uriah Heep!  They were great!!! Loved that 2 LP Live album!

On and On as we think of 'em!!!

Although it's been awhile since *I* was a kid, my favorite LP... well OK, they didn't have them yet, was a 78 with "The Teddybear's Picnic" on it. I don't remember who sang it or anything else.

I'm afraid that I wore it out with the steel needles that we used back then, the Audiophiles of the day used special Bamboo needles that they would sharpen with razor sharp pen knives. It was a skill much admired when one could get a perfect tip with just 2 precise cuts of the knife.

All Audiophiles back in the day were DIY'ers. :green:

If anyone has any idea where I could find The Teddybear's Picnic I'd appreciate knowing.

Best Regards,
TerryO

For myself it was like starting over. I have had to go out and find most LP's by:

* KISS
* Pink Floyd
* Alan Parsons Project
* Eagles (Hotel California)
* AC/DC
* Led Zepplin

Good Golly! Thank you very much, I never thought of Amazon as not too many people seem to have ever heard of The Teddybear's Picnic and I'm certainly surprised that it's available on any format.
This New Year is of to a very good start, thanks to you :thumb:

My first real album as a kid was Steve Miller's "Fly Like An Eagle".  I plan on getting a digital version of this in 2008.

Well I didn't own LPs in my youth, my father had LPs when I was a boy though and he gave them to me, so I don't have to rebuy them.  However my top LP wants are probably

Robin Trowers
Cream - Disraeli Gears
Jethro Tull - Aqualung

I always think of stuff I want on LP and then when I go to an LP store I forget...guess I need to make a list.

Like most everybody else, I've kept all of my albums with the exception of the ones I've worn out (several times) over the years. The few most notable ones I've worn out have been;

Yes -Close to the Edge
Yes - Relayer
Yes - Fragile
Wishbone Ash - Argus
Wishbone Ash - Theres the Rub
Genesis - Selling England
Genesis - Lamb Lies Down
...there are others but I don't recall them right now.

I have rebought most of what I used to listen to back in the late 60's and 70's as either audiophile copies or (better yet) old WLP (White Label Promo's). WLP's sound just as good, sometimes better than the 180g or audiophile reissues. remember, these were usually the first off the mother as they were on their on their way to the radio stations to introduced to all of us.

One I had to pick up recently that I had when I was a little tike;
Home and Jethro - Strikes Back! (Does you chewing gum loose its flavor on the bedpost overnight?)  :green:

I had some Quick Draw McGraw, Montovani and Singing Nuns given to me, I took QDM to school to show my friends when I got home I didn't go in the house so I stashed my treasure in the milkbox on our side porch. When I retreived it later it was all wavey :o and I was very upset :bawl:. The first record is used my own money for was a 45 America-A Horse With No Name/Everyone I Meet Is From California still have in it's paper sleeve with the advertisement on back for a $2 double album called "Hot Platters" with " 23 Complete Selections from the Latest Stereo Albums by Gordon Lightfoot, Norman Greenbaum, Paul 9of Peter, Paul & Mary0 Stookey, Jackie Lomax, Randy Newman, The Beach boys, The Kinks, Ry Cooder, Big Mama Thornton, John D. Loudermilk, Mother Earth, Deep Purple, John Baldry, T. Rex and so small number of others." Enen with the free shipping I wasn't biting.

One album I had from those days is Beatles Magical Mystery Tour which I am waiting for a Mint Japanese pressing replacement to arrive any day. :thumb:

While writing this I'm listening to an Oscar Peterson Memorial Broad cast that will last toll 6:30 PM on Wednesday on http://www.WKCR.org
