Turntable Speed/Pitch Problem
« on: 31 Dec 2007, 02:59 am »
Posted this in the vinyl section, but thought I might also post it here, since other "newbies" may be having similar problem...

I have a Denon DP-1200 direct-drive turntable and lately, I'm having a hard time keeping the speed/pitch stable. On several different albums, the speed will be fine, and then all of a sudden it will either speed up or slow down noticeably, then return to normal.

I've tried to play with the speed adjustment dial, but the problem keeps coming back.

Turntable's been in storage for about 10 years, but was playing fine for about two weeks until this began to happen.

Only thing I can think that's changed is the use of a Hunt record cleaning brush. I've not been pushing down on the record while cleaning, but is it possible I (or one of my kids) could have inadvertently damaged the motor somehow?

The other possibility is that the servo control is not working, based on the info below, which I copied from www.kabusa.com:

Speed Drift (Due To Static Stylus Drag)
In a freely rotating system like a turntable, any friction near the outside edge will try to slow the rotational speed. In drive systems without servo control, the turntable truly slows down the moment the stylus enters the groove, some as much as several percent. As the stylus moves towards the center or end of the record, the torque increases and the turntable regains most of its free rotating speed.
To avoid the affects of this static stylus drag, the drive system must have servo control.

My System:
Adcom GTP 500II preamp/tuner
Adcom 535 power amp

Any suggested tweaks would be helpful; or should I bring it to local audio shop for repair? (expensive!!!)

Thanks in advance for help. (Great site!!)

davidb928,   I had a DP 1100 with the same problem. The speed adjustment is a simple rheostat and it suffers from corrosion problems.
You could try replacing it with with a new rheostat of the same value. This might cure the problem. The short term fix for me was to apply some electronic contact cleaner to it. This stopped the problem for quite awhile.  I also NEVER used a cleaning brush on the record and expected the motor to spin the platter. I always rotated the platter by hand.
