Von Schweikert VR2???
« on: 31 Dec 2007, 12:42 am »
Hello,

I have a pair of VR2. They sound great however I would like to know if anyone has done any modifications on them to make them sound even better. I am upgrading the cheap floor spikes that came with the speakers, also, I am upgrading the binding post to Eichmans. Any other ideas? Ooops, almost forgot to ask, any suggestions on floor spikes?

Thanks to all in advance!

You might consider to replace the stock capacitors, resistors and wires from the crossovers to the drivers and woofers with high quality capacitors such as Sonicaps, Mundorfs, etc... and Mill resistors and some other better quality wires like pure copper silver plated. I have a pair of modded VR1s which are keepers.  :thumb:

chgolatin2,

There are complete directions with photos regarding the VR2 modifications I made here.

Let me know if you decide to disassemble the crossover, the components in my crossovers are covered in epoxy with just wires sticking out and would involve major surgery with a Dremel tool to discover their hidden secrets.

The editor/publisher of Audiophile Audition, John Sunier, uses these and has done a few things to improve their performance.  You can read about the mods he made under a review of my thing (pictured in my avatar on his VR2's, no less)(I know, shameless plug) in the Components Review section of his online magazine.  There are some guys here, notably Satfrat, who use two way floor standing Lorelei's of similar dimensions that might be of some relevance.

Damn!  I did it again.  The picture is of his center channel.  Oh well, his VR2's are pictured in the review.

There are still new VR-2 speakers available for sale on-line at www.NewForHalf.com.  I just want to inform net surfers and Googlers looking for them, that this may be the last place to get them new.

I just want to say beware to ACrs. The above referenced units have no warranty by VSA.  I was fortunate enough to contact VSA before purchase which changed my mind.  I even wound up purchasing Albert Von Schweikert's own personal pair of "Tweaked" VR-2s  :thumb:.

Sounds like you got a sweet deal, did Albert say how he tweaked his pair?

In regards to the no warranty for internet sales, that has been true since at least Sept. '06 when they decided to sell factory direct. Internet dealers were not happy when stuck with a speaker inventory that no longer had warranties.

I probably would have voided my warranty anyway by opening up the speakers and adding bracing.

Albert said some of the internal parts are used from the VR-4 series. I have not heard a standard pair of VR-2s to compare so I cannot comment on the difference. Mine had about 50 hours on them when Albert delivered them so they are still breaking in.  As soon as I get the max on placement I probably will  add the lead shot which Albert highly recommended. Another thought he suggested was Bi amping using  the Prima luna integrated tube amp that Kevin Deal sells at Upscale Audio on the top and my SS amp on the bottom. Albert said he knows of many other tweaks people have done to the VR2s and would be willing to share that information. You should be able to shoot him an e-mail if interested.  aa
