SP2 problem
« on: 17 Dec 2007, 12:14 am »
My SP2 malfunctioned while watching a DVD that started mistracking and then froze. The volume control kept going up by it's self, the remote did nothing so I kept turning down the volume manually and it just kept going back up to FULL volume. I switched to an unused input so it wouldn't blow out all my speakers. I held the volume control down and reached behind and switched the unit off. It seems fine now but at the time was rather scary. At the time the display said something about volume -14 which I guess is full volume. It has froze a couple of times before but never anything like this. Hopefully it's a software fix. I have the (original?) Mar.2006 software.

Hi Dan,

Sounds like a software glitch.  I have found that sometimes spikes on the power line can cause weird things to occur sometimes.

Email me (jamestanner@bryston.ca) the Serial number and where purchased of your SP2 and I will send you updated software.

My Yamaha av/receiver which I use for a pre-amp behaves something like that. If I try to adjust the volume down manually on receiver, it goes up. then I turn it the other way thinking I turned it the wrong way and it goes up some more. On one occasion I was afraid I would blow the speakers before I could react with the remote, which doesn't do that. So I quickly hit the master power switch and shut everything off.
Your situation sounds more like a poltergeist though. I've had strange things happen with TV remotes in the past that change the channel by themselves. Even if I had touched the remote, I couldn't have switched and browse the channel menu that fast. On one occasion it changed from the channel I was watching, to a  pay per view porn channel and almost activated it, for which I would have been billed. It happened so fast, even if it were interference from a house nearby no one could have scanned and pushed the select button that fast.
