Update:  Unplugged unit overnight as was suggested earlier.  No help.
Moved SB to two feet away from the router, just in case it was too far before.  No help.

Bryan, Thank you.  Your instructions were great.  I followed them (wired desktop) and determined I have been using the correct encryption key including letter case (all lower case).

Tweaker, Thank you for the info.  I checked and the settings are on WPA Personal and TKIP.

So, no problems.  Everything is set correctly.  Oh, there is one small problem.  The Squeezebox still won't connect.  Error message is "Encryption failure.......go back and try again".  One definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over while expecting different results.  I am not that far gone----yet.

Any other suggestions?  Remember, baby steps, English and I need to keep my laptop connection as well.  You can take this private if you wish.

Reset your encryption using start up disc.

Reset your encryption using start up disc.

How would that differ from going to 192.168.1.1?

Logitech tech support told me to change my password but that did not help.  They have not gotten back to me with any other suggestions yet.

Hi,
Have you tried the suggestion of switching off encryption entirely at the router (just for a quick test)? Given what you've tried so far this makes sense. It will confirm whether the problem is really encryption or a wider issue.

I was told to change the router password.  That is located on the "internet security settings" page of 192.168.1.1 for my Linksys (and maybe a default page for all routers, I am not sure).

I don't know anything about the Slimserver address.  After changing the password at the page I listed I entered the password in the Squeezebox itself using the remote.  Same results---"Encryption failure...so sorry dude".

When I changed the password on the router I selected "save changes" and received the message that the changes were saved.  Did I need to do anything else---like restart either the router or the wired desktop?

It has been a while since I set up my wireless laptop.  If I change the Linksys password will the HP laptop find the network (on the view available networks screen) and then ask me to enter a password?  Now it remembers the old password and connects automatically.

Darren,  No, I have not tried shutting off all encryption yet.  I was hoping Logitech tech support would give me something more substantial than try changing your WPA password. That was kind of weak.

What is the range of a wireless network (Linksys Wireless-G)?  My home may have enough space around it that someone would have to park on my lawn to access my router.  Can someone access my computer via the router or just the internet.

While sitting in my living room with my laptop I could access my friends service across the street if his router did not require an access code.  His house is at least 100 yards from mine.

You shouldn't have to do that. It appears the WPA is the issue.  You can leave WEP enabled.  I'd shoot for that.

In all honesty, I'd ask the question over on the SlimDevices forum instead of Logitech tech support.  The guys over there have tried pretty much everything.  I gotta believe someone over there has gotten this to work.

Thanks to everyone.  I switched to WEP 64 bit and everything is working now.  Logitech tech told me " Occasionally we have found some routers have mixed results with WPA and the Squeezebox."

Well, duh.  The Linksys router is probably one of the most common in use.  You would think someone would want to fix that issue.

Well, now I guess all I have to do is get my laptop reacquainted with the Linksys.

What do I do with all of the Keys generated by the WEP?  Do I enter one or more into the laptop or use my passphrase?

You need only one passcode for WEP. Let the program generate one then enter that in the SB encryption screen. If you've selected the 64 bit WEP encryption it should be straightforward.

You have your choice of which of the four sets of numbers to use that were generated by the password. The router defaults to the first set so you will only need to enter those to get your laptop back online. But you do have to enter numbers rather than the password.
Glad to see the problem was finally solved. The Squeezebox is a very cool device but it certainly can be a headache to get up and running.

Glad you got it working.

Save the hex code in a text file on your laptop in case you ever need it again.  I've had to use it occasionally when someone else would bring their Squeezebox over and also when I've added another to my home.  If you want to secure it a little, you can save it in an encrypted zip file and password protect the file so it can't be accessed except by you.

Everyone,

Thanks for all of your help and support.  I learned a lot about wireless routers.  More than I wanted to know but with computers, ignorance is not bliss.

I wrote down all of the encryptions and saved them in a 3-ring binder I keep dedicated to my computers.  It has saved my butt many times.  And now, thanks to Bryan, I know where to go on my desktop to find the encryption files or change them.  Hey, if I lose the keys I can always go in and change my password and generate new keys.

Glad things are running. Do write down your WEP code. I keep mine at each computer location that accesses the internet as I occasionally have to re-enter it if there's a glitch in the wireless connection.
