ModWright Capacitors
« on: 18 Nov 2007, 09:45 pm »
From description of ModWright "36.5" preamp:

"Full complement of MWI Custom capacitors - designed by ModWright... Pure Teflon film/foil and oil-impregnated poly caps in power supply and signal path applications."

Does anyone knows anything about these, particualrly oil-impregnated poly caps, did anyone compare them with other oil capacitors in blind or any fashion?

Thank you.
Simon

Not sure how we'd compare them; they are proprietary to Dan's work at Modwright.   I'm not sure there are even two exact same modded units out here, one with MWI caps, one with another brand, in the same path, etc.  Likely an impossible task, and no offense, but not sure what conclusions or meaning you'd find anyway.  The parts aren't but a portion of the modded magic; the implementation is key.

Hello Simon,
I agree with Ted in that comparisons are very subjective and may not provide the exact answers you seek.

I can tell you that we use the ModWright OIMP capacitors exclusively (in conjunction with an's Teflon units) throughout the Acoustic Zen EXtreme Adagio modification and the results were very satisfying as the forthcoming review will show as well.

There are not a lot of OIMP caps on the market but I can tell you this. With a good OIMP capacitors, you retain the speed, articulation of a good metallized poly cap while in addition receiving a bit of the oil magic as well.

I have used these caps in various applications and find them to be a provide an excellent balance of detail and smoothenss.

Take it for what it's worth as I know how subjective capacitor taste can be.

Thank you very much Bill - I appreciate your knowledge and experience immensely!
A few years ago, you suggested (and I followed your suggestion ) that combination of VH AUdio OIMP bypassed by small value TFTT cap is a heaven and you were right !!!!!! I use smallest TFTT value 0.01 uF - as fitting my taste).

How ModWright OIMP stand against VH Audio OIMP in the "magic" area?

I will narrow my question a bit. Mundorf silver/oil has too much of this magic (for my tatse of course) - its very warm capacitor. VH Audio - is a bit colder ( but accurate in timbral represenation, IMO again). Between both where Modwright stands?

Thank you again

Very glad to hear the recommendation was to your liking.

This is a very difficult question that I cannot answer with 100% honesty. The reason being I have not tried the ModWright OIMP in other applications where I have used the VH Audio OIMP and only because the values are not available from ModWright.

I will not be the one to perform any comparison shootouts between these two capacitors but will continue to use each in their applications as I find both to be exceptional in the applications I currently use them in.
