Squeezebox Woes - Dropped Connections
« on: 17 Nov 2007, 05:42 pm »
I have truly enjoyed the fully Bolder modded squeezebox that I have added to my system.  It really sounds great both using the analog as well as digital out through a Lite DAC-60.

However, recently I have had some wireless issues with dropped signals.  My squeezebox is only two rooms away from a brand new intel based imac, but I still only get a signal strength of ~30%.  The dropouts have gotten so bad, even despite attempts to limit the bit rate of the music being spooled to the Squeebox, but with no real change in the drop out problem.  I had to use a workaround by hooking up an airport express up to the squeezebox via ethernet and thus, the system is still wireless, but the airport express is being used as a wireless bridge. ( http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=38477 ) I would attribute this perhaps to a poor reception / poor antenna in the Squeezebox for receiving WiFi signals.  I can't think of anything else, as the airport express appears to solve the issue even using lossless bit rate streaming.  I would like to hear if anyone has had a similar experience??

As I bought the squeezebox as a way of bridging the gap between my computer where all of my music now lives (as I have gotten rid of many of my redbook CDs), I might have approached this a little different, if I knew that I could not use the squeezebox wirelessly (but needed an ethernet connection).  Looks like I will be buying a mac mini in the future to hook up to my squeezebox!!!

Any input would be greatly appreciated.  Anyone using an external antenna setup with the squeezebox?? ( http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=34315 )

I have had some connectivity issues before.  I went wired partly to get away from that -- I also think it sounds better but that's a subjective thing.  Before that I used a Linksys range extender which helped bridge the signal through 2 floors.   That boosted my signal up to 90% range.  You can try that.  Also make sure your phone isn't on the same frequency -- I went to faster phones to avoid that.

Good luck.

I am using a Bolder Modded S3 and my Intel Based Desktop is upstairs on the other side of the house.  I use an old Microsoft Router and have no issue with drop-outs.  Not certain about your server and router but to me it sounds like you are sending a weak signal to the S3.  If you have access to a laptop computer you could check your wireless signal strength.

Good Luck,

You didn't mention what kind of Wireless router you were using?

The airport xpress from the iMac gives an average wifi radius. I would use an external router to get the best reception/wifi distance. I use a netgear g mimo and get a good reception radius.

Todd,

have you tried changing the wireless channel on the router?  I use a SB3 and about two months ago had some dropping issues. I selected a different channel and have had no problems since. I stream SlimServer from an iMac upstairs to a Netgear MIMO G router on the main floor and then over to the SB3 in another room on the main floor.

Thanks for the input.

I have an airport base station that is my external router, however, it is in my basement and thus, may not provide the best signal.  I will change the wireless channel for my wifi network and see if that provides a more clear signal.  I'm guessing that I could also set my airport express as a bridge to extend the range of my my wifi network.  I'll see if this works as well.

I should have no issues with phones as our household has no land lines only cellphones.

I agree with all of this. I havevn't had a dropout in 2 years with this setup (Netgear WPN824 MIMO) ... router is upstairs and a room away from Bolder modded SB2.

I once had an Airport Extreme UFO shaped router and also a SQ2....It had dropping issues that you point out.  The easiest way of checking out whether it is the Airport problem get a different router and see whether problems go away.  I have seen that MIMO or N type of routers have become really cheap...$79 for one.

I had bad wireless dropouts too and decided to go ethernet. Somehow, the music seems to be much better through enternet than wireless!
