I'm only 56 and you'd be surprised how little I'll get at age 60 after 35 years at GE,,,, the problem being it's a nonunion shop and that's reflected in your pension and the reason my I was unjustly fired. Neither of those 2 things happen were there's a union covering your back. Right now in 4 years, I'm looking at $450/week. Makes one really look forewrd to the Golden Years, don't it?

Well for me, the Golden Years are the here and now by having all day to audition my Lorelei's. And Chris wants me to sent parts out across the country?  It could happen,,,, I'd need to hear from Jim tho, he may not even be interested in more cones.  :dunno:

I'm 6' 3" and 245lbs,,,, we get just as screwed!  I know what you're saying tho, GE's corporate executives get more in bonuses each year than I made in a lifetime and gE earned double digit profits each year yet we're ponying up for health insurance,,,,insurance that was free back in 1970 when the unions still had a little clout. I had to wait 35 years for GE to give me a bonus, that being getting fired so I can listen to my Lorelei's fulltime.  :thumb: Whata company!

Hi Jeff,

Throw a rug on the wooden floors and one behind the speakers and that will improve the sound further for you.

How is the bass (slam) with the Loreleis? I have a hard time with a 6.7" driver putting out the bass I'm used to with my Ohm I speakers (4 way - 12" subwoofer, 8" mid-woofer, 2" mid-tweeter, 2 1" tweeters). The Lorelei just doesn't seem that they could move very much air. Do they have any rock to them? Anyone?

thanks,
Rick

Rocket,

I can't put a rug on the main floor, but I will try something behind the speakers. I spoke with Glenn at GIK Acoustics yesterday and he has made some good suggestions also. My wife and I are discussing whether or not to get some of their products, they have a 30 day retun policy, but I don't like to buy things just to try. I need to feel pretty confident that we could live with some things on the wall and floor.

Darth Audio,

I did have 25 lbs of shot in each bass module and it made a big difference. They are still not as clean as the Lorelei's. Don't get me wrong I fell in love with the VR4's the 1st time I heard them and still don't want to part with them. I may keep them for my downstairs system. or maybe I should sell them and buy the used Lorelei's on the 'Gon. So many decisions.

Thanks
Jeff

Rick,
The bass out of these is amazing. Yes, they rock and more. These sound so much bigger than they are. Deep, high and wide soundstage, with bass that sounds real, not bloated or muddy. You have to hear them to believe it, and I wish I had before, I could have saved a bundle.

I agree the bas slam is amazing, also bass notes are well defined.  I believe Klaus rates em down to 32 Khz but that is really conservative - Klaus told me he's measured em down to 26 Khz.  Mine are 24"  from the back wall.

- Id like to get my hands on some used Sp-004 Sistrum Platforms.  $540.00 seems steep for two - (might have to spring for it.)

Great thread.  (Always wondered how the Loreleis would compare to Vr4 Jrs) - I thought Klaus's room at RMAF sounded better than the CI audio/von schweikert room.

Happy veterans day.

Jeff: I just put up a handful of GIK stuff a month or so ago....it was the most dramatic improvement I've ever made to my system.

I think we are going to try plants to sart with, that's what Klaus uses. One behind each speaker, then possibly a couple behind the couch. My wife has been really supportive in my hobby(she even made some heavy drapes for our room) and I don't want to push it.  She's not super picky, but those treatments aren't small. There's not a lot of options for us and it's not like we can't live with the already wonderful sound.

I don't post much here, but I have to say a word the bass of the Loreleis: few people in the world have a finer ear than Rolf Gemein; that is why his products cost so much. In a wonderful interview with the German magazine Ars!, in 2004, RG revealed that clear bass has been a lifelong "silent affection" of his. He also stated that the speakers in his personal reference system are RG5. (I have heard that the RG5 has the same design as the Legato, but with a different bass driver - RG uses a rare Görlich Podszus driver instead of the ScanSpeak.) This surprised me, since the RG5 is not his most expensive speaker; the Belcanto S costs three times as much.

The Odyssey Lorelei is a speaker to hang on for life. The Sensible Sound reviewer was right on the mark when he described this speaker as "pure gold". Many thanks to Klaus for this labor of love.

I forgot to add: I would recommend at least 24" from the wall.

I have placed my Loreleis on Viablue TRI Absorbers:

A nice base consisting of a threaded base, an upper 3 cone holder and a support plate. They are compact, can adjust 1 or 1.5mm height and very easy to place.

Those look nice, Eduardo.  What size are those, in terms of diameter?  Also, how many are you using under each speaker.  My Loreleis are just on the carpet and I've been looking for some kind of spike to raise them just a bit.

As far as "tipping" with the Lors, that is their main drawback. I use WBT locking bananas on my speaker cables and when my diminutive girlfriend accidentially brushed up against a Lor it tipped over and one WBT platinium binding post snapped in two! Those posts retail for close to 70 bucks EACH and are a PITA to replace!

Don't you mean "ex-girlfriend"?

I busted a gut on that remark. Gee Jim, I hope you got lucky and didn't ding up the veneer. I've had my 4 Lorelei's sitting on Sistrum Platforms for over 3 years now and I'm been lucky seeing how I have to get around the left Lorelei when i need to get to the back of my rack. I've grabbed a save twice now but my Australian Shepard has yet to even touch one and weplay pretty ruff sometimes. LOL Like Jim says, I've had my Lorelei's for 4 years now and they still take my breath away each and every time I fire them up. It's ashame more folks don't give them a listen.

Sp-004 Sistrum Platform

Robin

As to the height for those interested, these platform raise the Lorelei's 3.75" which for me in my chair raise the tweeter to the height of my ears. This makes a huge difference in getting soundstage off the floor and into midair. Unless you sit on the floor, I think any device that'll raise the Lorelei's so the tweeter's are at ear level while sitting in your listening chair will enhance the imaging & soundstage of the Lorelei.

I totally agree with that remark that the Lorelei is a loudspeaker to retire with. I can't imagine ever parting with mine. :thumb:

How far away from the back wall do they need to be? I have been thinking of trying out a pair, but they need to be able to work 12-18" from the back wall in my set-up.
Thanks,
Rick

I have my front set of Lorelei's 40" from the front wall and 18" from the side walls. I find this distance really expends the soundstage. Being the Loreli's are rear ported, they need room to breath. FWIW, I tripled my Lorelei's definition/clarity/whatever you want to call it  by using Sistrum Platforms 004 under all 4 of my Lorelei's. If you don't have kids/dogs/a clumsy persona,,,  :green: these platforms are worth their weight in gold,,,,, strictly my own opinion. YMMV.   :D

Robin

Not just your opinion Robin, I also have the Lors on a pair of Sistrum platforms and love them with those things.  I've got two clumsy dogs and no issues thus far!  My Lors are not quite 40" from the rear wall but they are over 30  - I've got them about 6-10" in front of my TV to match the front plane with my center.

Great stuff!

And I've got you Brian to thank for turning me onto this Usher X-616 center,, it's more in line sonically with the Lorelei's and any other that I've tried. It's an awesome center, so good that there's a rear center 5' behind my chair!  :thumb:

BTW, the center stand is solid oak stand patterned after Sound Anchors design and made by Timberlands.  :D
