All, you can't go wrong with the selections available from Abstract Logix  http://www.abstractlogix.com. The site was new to me (but perhaps old news for some of you!). I found the sheer number of choices available almost overwhelming.

I ordered several CDs which shipped promptly.

I listened today to some tracks from the new Paul Hanson release, available there. Excellent!

Thanks for the nice kudos.  I would love to say I found this hidden gem by myself, but this bargain was brought up to me by some folks on the Hoffman Forum.  That's what I love about these forums, cuz I've thrown some AC nuggets their way too.

Sorry, the link is fixed, but Chris fixed it too.   :thumb:

They do sound great, and (embarrassed to say, as a late-blooming Coltrane fan) I owned none of them previously.

Got mine too! thanks!!!

IMO, the best coltrane ablums are "Blue Trane" and "Soultrane"

Also, too bad the reissue (SACD) of Kind of Blue isn't sonically what I hope sacd would be (it's an early sacd release by Sony).  I was listening to it last night...it sounds good, but not like the vinyl. Also, the players, WOW, Miles, John, Adderly, Paul Chamber, Bill Evans and Philly Jones...can't ask for a more "ALL STAR" Ensemble, can we???

Love it!

Yep, KOB is not the greatest SACD I own but it sure sounds damn good (cuz of the music).

I love the Coltrane/Monk collaborations, and of course A Love Supreme.  Still don't own some classics like My Favorite Things, Sun Ship or Giant Steps....but there's time (I hope   :thumb:)

Not a classic, but the new Pat Metheny "Day Trip" is to be released on 1/29.  Samples are up on Amazon now.  It's on my pre-order :)

Just ordered the Coltrane and Evans sets, thanks guys!   :thumb:

My wife got this for me last Xmas:

http://www.stereophile.com/thefifthelement/1206fifth/

It's a well-written book with four accompanying CDs covering the Impulse fireball from 1960-ish to around 1975.  The book and disks follow each other and listening/reading them together is/was a great and educational experience.  It's a great musiclover's story as played out in experimental sound.  There's a great collection of photos too.

Totally worthy!

Yeah, other than mentioning I don't own Giant Steps, I'm missing the Dolphy and the Armstrong from this top 20.

Funny thing about Coltrane is that you ask for people's top three and you get twenty different sets.

Wow, bought that for my jazz-loving college son last Christmas i think (2006) but didn't realize it had cd's with it.     Could be a version that is book only?

Some classic jazz

The Dave Brubeck Quartet - Time Out
The classic quintessential jazz album and one of the all time greats. I'm sure you’ve heard it. If you haven't, you’re missing something very special. For you vinyl guys, the album takes this recording to the next level. Take Five is truly breath taking.

Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
Kind of Blue is a jazz album that has transcended the genre of jazz and become one of a handful of recordings whose very existence changes everything. It is the landmark jazz album. The album's lineup is one of the most astonishing of all time, featuring such greats as John Coltrane, Bill Evans and Cannonball Adderley. Together, they're the definitive classic jazz band whose collective greatness will likely never be matched. Listening to this album will immerse you at once in a world that is dark, brooding, sophisticated, very cool, sexy, and langorous. Bottom line is: if you don't have this record in your collection, you don't have a collection.

Kenny Burrell - Blue Midnight
Midnight Blue is one of those records that you just put on, sit back and relax. It is blues felt the way Kenny feels, no piano, just his own groove. It demonstrates just how closely linked the blues and jazz truly are

Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto - Getz/Gilberto
Here is another classic. You have all heard "The Girl from Ipanema", but did you know it was written about the seventeen year old Helô Pinheiro. She inspired Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes in 1962 to write this song. Sitting in a cafe they saw her every day going to the beach of Ipanema, a district of Rio de Janeiro. Also, on the album the girl singing is Astrud Gilberto, Joao's wife. She and Getz's wife, Monica, were in the studio to listen. There is some debate over who suggested Astrud try singing a verse; Stan, Joao or Monica, but whoever did, it created one of the most memorable songs in history. This is only one of the jewels on this album.

OH, and my absolute favorite...
SONNY ROLLINS "WAY OUT WEST" it's got to have the best album cover and well, Rollins, Brown and Mann, can't beat that...and the first album by any artist to replace the traditional jazz trio with the sax instead of the piano!

My oh My...I have the SACD, the Analogue Production Reissue and the OJC.  Want the 45rpm, but at $150...too much...

Hey yeah, it looks like the book is available solo, maybe the CDs are too.  As a companion set, it's special stuff.  Individually, they still would be worth owning.

I LOVE Giant Steps, it's my favorite Coltrane.

Is the SACD worth it, best of the bunch?

I have the 20-bit K2 remastered version of this, and the sonics are fantastic.  And yes, this is also one of my all-time favorite jazz performances, too...

Some great stuff here. As an "Old School" listener I have a hard time ferreting out great new musicians without wading through a lot of garbage (Kenny G. fans look elsewhere). I intend to follow up on all the musicians in this string I've never heard of. Thanks guys!

Rather than add my own favorites to the list I want to recommend a book to all Coltrane fans (old and newbies). "Coltrane - The Story of a Sound", by Ben Ratliff, does the best job so far of explaining why Trane and his music are still intensely fascinating 40 years after he left us.

BTW: Jazz DJ Helen Borgers once said you could put together a great collection of jazz from the post bebop era by just buying all the records released in a single year - 1957.

I have this on LP but no TT anymore :(, so I decided I NEED one on CD to rip to my library.  After searching Amazon there are so many reissues, etc.  I couldn't figure out from that which one was the K2 flavor.  Which one do I get?  TIA  Tom

I think it's out of print now, but here's what the cover looks like:

To be honest, to me, the Analogue Production LP, around $25 is better than the SACD,which still has a lot of tape hiss and well, the LP is more dynamic and tonally better...that's comparing from a Scout table with Shelter 501 to a Marantz SA11S2 player...

Shout out to Wardsweb for a good response and text.  Coltrane's Live at The Village Vanguard and Live at Birdland get my juices flowing.
