N okia 770 For Squeezebox/Transporter
« on: 4 Nov 2007, 02:47 am »
I recently helped someone install a Sonos whole house system and was very impressed with the remote control interface, which got me thinking about a similar solution for a SB.
Has anyone any experience with using a Nokia 770, or PSP, as a remote - and if so any comments they can share?

If are using a computer in another part of the house to route music to your Squeezebox you can use a laptop computer in your listening area to control the S3.  I found the following instructions on Slim Forums a couple of months ago and it works great:

Just point the browser on your laptop to http://<slimserver_ip>:9000/ , but putting the IP address of your S3 Server pc in place of <slimserver_ip>.
>Do I need to have the slimserver installed on my laptop along with Softsqueeze <
No.
>is that the same ip address that I am showing on the Squeezebox<

It's the IP address of the server your squeezebox connects to. On the SB Menu do Settings->Information->Server Information and scroll down to Host IP address.

Here's a thread in this Circle, regarding the Nokia.

We all went out and grabbed one while this sale lasted.  I love mine.  Some Nokia album art, etc on my gallery link (example here).

Thanks Ted - while I was sleeping it looks like Nokia launched the N800 and now the N810!
Just goes to show what happens when you take your eye off the ball.
Ken - thanks for the tip, I do take my laptop into my media room but it gets a bit cumbersome and its not as easy to lose behind the back of the sofa as a smaller device!

I do a lot of internet browsing while I listen to music so having the laptop also control the S3 works great for me.

I've got a laptop. I've got the Nokia 770. I prefer the Squeezebox remote. For me it's faster, simpler, and less distracting.  I'd be happy to sell you my Nokia.

I never use the SB remote when I have the 770.  Moreover, the 770 can surf the web, which is great.  I can get my email/check the news/weather, while feeding the baby.  You can't do that with the SB remote.  On the other hand, I tend to use the SB remote with my second system and not my main system.

I can use my Nokia 770 and Dell Axim for my Squeezebox but they're slow and annoying. I prefer a computer/laptop first and the SB remote second.

So when do you actually listen to the music? . That's exactly why I've abandoned the Nokia. Too distracting. When the tunes are on I like to give them my full attention.

Has anyone compared the iPhone, or iPod Touch (both with wi-fi Safari browsers) to the Nokia 770/800 to remotely control Slimserver/ iTunes playlists and SB playing? On the Slim Devices Forum folks report good success with the Apple units so far. The iPhone/iPod seems to work easily with Slimserver's remote skins, and can zoom in and out for selections. A couple of years ago the Nokia 770 was not at all Mac friendly (trouble hand-shaking with the Apple Airport Extreme router).  I hope Nokia has ironed out these Mac interface kinks and poor support for those of us Mac diehards.

Thanks for all the input on this.
I picked up a Nokia N800 on line last Sunday for just over $200, it arrived Friday and very impressive.  Already have it up and running with my SB, also setup a google mail account yesterday and have my 2 private and 2 business email accounts forwarding to gmail, not forgetting my Skype account for overseas calls and BBC radio!
Off on a business trip today with it in tow, and what a relief not to have to take my laptop with me with all the weight and  TSA show and tell  :thumb:

Anyone bought batteries and can make recommendations?  I've found some of the Chinese low cost camera batteries on ebay have worked better than OEM batteries (longer life), but it can be hit or miss.

NB
It works great as a SB remote, only down side is that I need reading glasses or longer arms  :o

The only ebay rechargeable batteries I ever bought were worthless, wouldn't hold a charge, etc.  Didn't pay too much so it wasn't worth the hassle of trying to return them to Hong Kong, but they were a complete bust.

I now buy mine at Thomas Distributing, and have been very happy.  They have frequent sales & special deals if you can wait a while.  Link:

I have had issues connecting my N800.  It is working fine on the internet but I cannot connect to slimserver for some reason.  Could any of you IT gurus give me some tips?

I had some problems with my 770 in the same way.  It was due to Domain Name Service not associating the right numeric address to substitute for the name.  You might try using the exact numeric 192.x.x.x:9000 address to see what happens.  I'm no expert here, but I fumbled through getting mine working after a bit of frustration.  Tom

I'm at work now, but remember doing exactly what Tom suggests, i.e putting in the exact IP address of the Squeezecenter server.  It finds it every time.

I had the same issue - internet connection but couldn't find my slimserver/SB.  I found that I was using the wrong IP address.  As I'm travelling I don't have access to the menu structure but maybe one of the other users can jump in with the details?

Got mine working!  All I was doing wrong was putting in the ip of slimserver insted of the ip of the pc.
Now my next question is if I have artwork that pops up if I pull up a album via the music folder why does it not show up when I browse with the artwork option?

Do a complete wipe and rescan.  Mine did that too, and Logitech Cust Service recommended a clean rescan.  What happened to me, on V7, is that the album art only starts showing up in browse mode when I actaully pick it for play.  Then it stays in browse mode.  that would have meant picking all 700 albums by hand.  Did a rescan and all is well (make sure you're on V7; V6.5.x does not even do the "remembering picked albums" thing).  In V7 you'l lfind the album artwork preferences under advanced/formatting.
