Ever been scared by your system? ? ?

Man. . .

I was just in the listening room and put on the soundtrack to The Mission.  I have heard things before that freaked me out, like things I have never heard before.  But this was different.  This time, I was actually startled!  I mean, I have been startled before when something major happens in a song, and I think my speakers are going to fly across the room.

This was different still.  It was a combination of things that startled me this time.  The soundtrack has a lot of impact anyway on certain tracks, but this time, it was way more "grab you by the balls"!!!  I mean, the impact was like an explosion, but at the same time, a very precise, and controlled explosion!  I mean, the realism during the impact startled me most of all!

I just had to leave the listening room, and I am going to watch COPS.  No more for me tonight.  My goodness!  The missing link in my system since I got the DAC from Scott Nixon was the transport.  This was the second day I had the new transport, and the first time I listened to that disc.

I have never in my life heard anything like this, and I am so impressed that a $280 USED DVD player can kick so much @$$!!!!!!!!!

Man, I need a digital cable!  I am using a PBJ as it stands. . I can't imagine that it gets better, but I know a good cable would get me closer.  I may jump out the window though with a better cable.  I gotta slow down. . .

Need to watch some TV.  whew!

I'd highly suggest getting Wayne to build you a coax with Silver Eichmann's & Cryo treatment.

I didn't think a digital could make that much of a difference. Boy was I wrong. Wayne's digital with Silver Bullets & Cryo treatment was the second biggest improvement I've made to my setup. It felt like I went from watching movies, to being in the movie. The realism is incredible. If you do pick one up you might want to put something soft to land on outside your window... :rotflmao:

And yes, I've had a similar experience on my setup watching The Haunting in DTS ES when I first watched it on my setup. I was getting bored with it at the moment so I started checking email on the 'puter (right behind my listening area) and left the movie running. It was night time with no one else in the house. Don't recall what was going on in the movie, but it scared the crap out of me as I swore that something was going on in the house just upstairs. And that was when I had a crappy digital. Can't imagine what that'd do to me now...

I forgot the norh 7.0s somewhere around #17... Considering that I bought 99% of my stuff pre-owned and sold most of it for near what I bought it for, I'll bet I've spent @ 1200.00 on buying and selling in the past two years. Considering that my home theater consists of a 10 year old 27" TV hooked up to my Audiomat, the amount of time I spend listening, the cost of my rig including rack and cables ($3k total), what other people spend on their stuff and how many cds I buy every year and what I COULD be spending, I think I've done pretty well. :D

The biggest scare I had was once while listening to the male vocal group, Cantus, the album "Let Your Voice Be Heard."  This is a professional singing group out of Minnesota dedicated mostly to classical vocal music, but with lots of old folk and spirituals thrown in.  Anyway, the album was recorded and engineered by John Atkinson, of Stereophile.  A really great sounding album, but as most is a cappella, the levels tend to vary.

I was listening to a negro spiritual from the early 1800's (if I recall the liner notes) at a pretty loud level when towards the end the members throw down a bunch of chains.  The blast nearly threw me off he couch!  To make matters worse, I was reading, not paying as much attention as I should have...nearly had to, uh, clean the couch off!

The runner up would be the scene in LotR when the wraith riders first thunder by; the bass was truly frighening!  I was half expecting plaster to fall out of the ceiling or my subs to explode (luckily, neither occurred).

The last time my system scared me is when it crept in to bed in the middle of the night and started wrapping speaker wire around my neck - scared the crap out of me!  The system just laughed and thought it was a good joke. . .

Eric The Red-You should own a used Audio Store!

Scared of my system:
Yes a few times. When I had Maggies first, can't remember what I was listening to.

Recently track 8 or 9 of Darkside of the Moon.I have a remasterd CD of it and the laughter started coming from the side wall.I had heard effects like that before, but they were on the Roger Water's Amused to Death CD recirded in Qsound. When I initially heard it on Darkside I almost fell out of my seat. :P

Speaking of Amused, the Genies voice always makes me shudder.Makes the whole room vibrate and sends the Subwoofer into an overdrive rumble. One of the best test I have found for Subs.

Sica:

Keep an eye out in the Critics circle.  I am going to do a full review of it soon!

This one is Scott Nixon's tube DAC.  It is no oversampling, no de-emphasis, no digital filtering, no analog filtering.

The DAC is $350 assembled with the tube, or you can buy it cheaper as a kit.  I just don't have the expertise to assemble it nicely.

I'll just say that it's the best sound I have ever heard, and it's like I got hundreds of new CD's for $350.

Review is forthcoming. .

My system scared the crap out of me one time. I had a bad tube and when it died it took out some resistors and the fuse :o Smoke literally came out from underneath the tube.

I know what you meant, sonically of course. I have to admit, my system images soundstages and throws Q-sound in ways that make me wet my pants. I was listening to nine inch nails "downward sprial" and there are some crazy effects that make voice sound like they're whispering in your ear and traveling slowly around your head. I've never EVER heard any other system do this before and believe me I've listened to a lot.
