Alternatives to a Tivoli tabletop radio?
« on: 27 Oct 2007, 09:57 pm »
I'm looking for a barebones tabletop tuner that sounds decent for my girlfriend, and for whatever reason the Tivoli is the only thing that comes to mind.  I'm just wondering if there are any alternatives to a Tivoli that might sound as good or better?  She wouldn't want more than the most basic Tivoli, which is a tuner dial and a mono speaker to listen to radio in the morning...

Stereophile liked the Music Hall RDR-1 ($200):

which apparently is a modified Sangean WR-2 which costs $60 less ($140):

Sorry to say that I've not heard either of them.

The GE Supertuner (now made by RCA and marketed under the RCA brand) is about $50. It's AM section is the best I've heard on any tuner, regardless of cost. It's FM is very awesome as well, featuring a 5" woofer and a 1" tweeter. It has no alarm features, but it's portable, and has external antenna connections, bass/treble and headphone jack. I have 3 of them.

I've got the Music hall in the basic wood finish if you would like it for $125.  Just PM me.
Traded up to a Meridian F80, so the trusty Music Hall needs a good home.

Have box and it's in perfect shape.

Two other options:

1).  The tube radios sold by Sound Quest.  http://www.questforsound.com/tuners.htm

2).  The Boston Acoustics Recepter Radio line
