Help with subwoofer into 2 channel system
« on: 24 Oct 2007, 09:35 pm »
Hi All,

I just bought a oppo 970 Universal player. I am using the analog out into my odyssey tempest preamp - odyssey stratos amp - odyssey epiphony II speakers. I was trying to add a sub into the mix and realized I had a problem. I had the setting on the player to downmix to stereo and If I plug in the sub to the dvd player I get nothing on the sub out. I changed it to dolby 5.1 but realized that CDs dont have a separate channel recorded for subwoofers. Do I need an external crossover here  or is there a way to feed the subwoofer from my preamp?

thanks

I believe that you can split the ICs (RCA) downstream from the PreAmp using a Y connector, so the signal goes to both the Stratos and the sub.   Not sure how this affects the signal to the amp, however.

John's right, just use a Y-adapter at the pre-amp out and run a second set of cables to your sub inputs.

Just thought I would add in case it's not clear that using a Y-adapter means your speakers will be playing full range and the sub will possibly overlap some depending on how you have its crossover set.  So the key is to play with the sub's settings until you get the best blend possible.  If you wanted it to function more like a home theater setup where the main speakers don't overlap the sub's frequency then you'd need a crossover of some sort.

Mike has some very nice (seemingly) passive high pass filters available at his website. I'm actually very close to making the switch back to a high-quality 2-channel rig, and I'm going to incorporate a sub or two into the system. I plan to either get a preamp with two pairs of outputs or use the y-adapter solution already mentioned. Then I'll put high pass filters (probably 65hz) between the other set of preamp outs and the amp, so as to reduce the workload of the amp. I'll adjust the crossover/low pass on the subs and voila!

I think you can also run a single pair of RCAs from the preamp outputs into the subwoofer, and then use the subwoofer's high pass line level output to go to the amp. It would just depend on the subwoofer, I guess :)

You can buy a Paradigm X-30 crossover for around $125 at Audiogon/Ebay...I have one I keep around, and use....from time to time.

It works fine for what you want to do...three hi-pass choices:50/80/120hz. (mine is not for sale).

Vinay,

I own an Oppo 970 as well.  Did you check to see if the subwoofer setting was set to on and the speakers set to small?  The speakers need to be set to small to route the low bass to the sub output.  Also, you may want to check the Channel Levels to be sure that the sub level is not set at the minimum level.  Hope that helps.
