Under-carpet ethernet cabling?
« on: 23 Oct 2007, 04:50 pm »
Is there such a thing?  If so, what is it called and where do you get it?

Once our renovations to our living room are done my audio gear will be on the wall opposite the one with the only Ethernet outlet, and I'll need to run a suitable cable across the room and under a wool carpet.

Are there any options besides normal CAT-5?  I figure I can cut the pad underneath and separate it just enough to lay the cable in and then tape it over with packing tape or something, but if there is a better alternative, I'd like to know about it.

I need about 20 feet of cable to be safe.

TIA,

Jim

Jim.

It's not really a good idea to have it where it will be walked on.  The easiest way IMO is to pull the baseboard and run it around the perimeter in the gap between the drywall and the subfloor - behind the carpet tack strip.

Brian,

When I look at my room, that looks like a huge amount of work, and probably near 60 feet of cable.  There is one wall, a door, another short wall, a 4' x 8' nook, and then another long wall -- that's a lot of baseboard to pull, not to mention that two of those walls have hot water heat exchangers along them.  Man, I'm just sweating thinking about it.

Maybe I'll call one of the local net cabling companies to see if they can go under the floor -- again, complicated by a double sheetrock ceiling in the basement, and dry, blown celluose insulation (poke a hole in the ceiling and it rains confetti all over you.)  But, it's only 14 feet across, so they may be able to do it with a fish tape.  Going up and over is even worse, because there the blown celluose insulation was blown in in a wet matrix material that hardens (so you don't get the confetti problem when you poke a hole in it.).

And, I really don't want to run wireless -- for a variety of reasons.

Thanks for the advice though,

Jim

Excellent!  That's just what I had in mind, just wasn't sure if it existed or not.

Going to call them right now.

Thanks,

Jim

They had an even flatter one than the one you sent me a link to... the Super Flat -- made for running under carpet.  It's 1/16 thick and about 3/8" wide, and also comes in a shielded version -- which I bought.  25 footer was about $12 or a little less.

Looks like this will do just fine.

Thanks again,

Jim
