Any excellent low-budget transports out there?

I am thinking of selling my tube CD and getting a dAck and transport.  What would make a good transport for around $200 give or take? Used is fine.

Thanks

Andrew

You can sometimes find Sony DVD S7700's on Agon for $250.

If I were you, I'd find out what cheap unit Chris Own uses and try that one

As Marbles has mentioned the Sony DVP-S7700 is an excellent transport. However, you can get its predecessor for even less. For about $125-$150 on ebay you can get the DVP-S7000. I actually own both models but I prefer the 7000 and use it as my transport. Regardless of which model you choose, either one will make a stellar transport for the money.

I wouldn't have taken it seriously unless I heard it but... A Pioneer DVD player is a good transport.  I have the DV-656A and there are others out there... I paid about $120 new for it and it was better than my $1000 Arcam.

If you get some money later, you can get it modded for a little extra smoothness and detail capability.  (I got mine mod'd at www.modwright.com)

Good luck.

Wow, better as a transport than your $1k Arcam?  Was that stock or after the mods?

I tried the 47Ai as a transport.  My Cary seemed to do better, but the Cary does list for $3k.  That said, I am sure that mods will really transform the Pioneer.  Have you put a clock in yours?

I'll second (or third) the Sony DVP-S7700.  Great transport, digs REALLY deep and brings out everything.  Got mine on ebay for $215.

I had level 1 mods and a bybee filter on the digital output.  Even stock, it sounded good but, after the mods there were definitely more details and easily bettered the Arcam... (Specifically, the Alpha 8 which was a few years old but, sold for about a thousand new.)  Pre-modifications it was a close call but, the Pioneer seemed to sound better to me.

No clock mods were made.  I haven't been able to get a clear answer as to whether (and how) it would be useful since I'm using an external DAC.

Thanks for the reply.  The main difference I heard between the 47Ai and the Cary (as transports) was in terms of midrange smoothness, coherency and imaging.

I am not too sure to what extent a clock is helpful if you are using a dac.  I know that a DI/O benefits since when in the Ext Sync mode it uses the clock of the transport.  You may want to read about the Tent clock in www.diyhifisupply.com.  There is a model that is specifically designed for use with a dac.

I've got a new ShengYa CD S6 coming.   It should be here in a week or so.  It goes by the brand name Vincent in Europe.

If you're referring to me, nothing... I sold the Arcam a long time ago.  If you're not referring to me... oops, sorry.

has anyone done any comparisons between the Sony DVP-S7700 or S7000 and a Pioneer DVD player as transport. Was one considerably better sounding than the other?

currently i'm using a Pioneer DV 533 (which is probably equivalent to Pioneer DV 440) and am wondering if changing transports would actually produce an immediately apparent change in the sound of my system.

Also, I’m wondering how the Sony DVP-S7700 or S7000 stack up against the $500 CEC 3300 CD Player when it comes to the transport.

thank you

I can't comment on the Pioneer or the CEC. I have compared my 7000 to the nOrh cd player, which I believe is the same transport as the CAL Delta,  and a pioneer PD-65 stable platter design and in both cases I preferred the 7000. I don't know what it is about the design, perhaps it's the dual discrete lasers, but it extracts a lot more information without any detriment to the music. You can't lose given the price.

I haven't compared either, however, prior to this I did have a Rega Planet and McCormack SST-1 as transports and the Sony simply made them look sick.

Thanks for all the help.

I will be very interested to see how the CD S6 Sounds, and if I will want to sell it for the CO Dack.

I third or fourth the Sony 7000/7700.

They make a great transport, sound good, are cheap and built like a tank unlike newer Sonys and most mass market gear.

Another avenue is a used Pioneer Stable Platter CDP; PD65/75/77,
PD-S904/S802/S703.

Or a good TEAC VDRS CDP or classic Marantz/Philips eg.CD10, CD94 etc.

The basic transport mechanisms of all the above were good enough to be used by various High End digital companies.
