Oritek- Modded Zhalou DAC
« on: 8 Oct 2007, 04:09 pm »
For the money asked IMO you cannot find a DAC to beat this thing. The only thing you will need to do is improve the power supply. The only NOS DAC IMO to compete with the big boys. There are many Wanna Be's out there. Please check this baby out. A giant killer if there ever was one.
Best part its shipped from Calif. No overseas shipping costs and if there is a problem with it its back to Calif.

I noticed in another thread, you recommended the stella da100, which i currently use and like very much. Could you comment on how the two compare?

Actually they are very close in character. The stella price wise is the winner. It cost around $1000 to make the external power supply for the Zhalou.
So for a assembled DAC with no hassle IMO you cannot better the Stello for the price. You will find that the digital cable for the DAC is critical. The Stella likes copper the Zhalou likes Silver.
We have not compared one to another directly, so I cannot give you a clear answer. However the Stello faired quite well in my system against my ref. CEC transport and Weiss Media DAC.
I believe Oritek has a 30 day money back Guar. Give it a run otherwise you will never know.

spud, you state "for the money" but I don't see a total price for the modded zhalou.

Spud,

What kind of Ref. CEC transport are you using (is there a model number and/or letter?) and I only found a Weiss MEDEA but not Media one!!! :dunno:

.....The only NOS DAC IMO to compete with the big boys....

As far as I know, with either the AD or CS dac chips available in the Zhaolu, neither is NOS (non oversampling).

That is $400 for DAC and Approx $1000 for power supply. Power supply is homemade not supplied by Oritek.

The transport is a TLO-X.  It has a perfect synergy with the Weiss DA. A bit pricey but IMO the real deal, so far.
