Just discovered:

1. IRFAN, a band from Bulgaria.
Very authentic and interesting.

2. Also, Sain Zahoor, who won the BBCs award for best new middle eastern discovery.

Bruce Swedien's latest

This is what Bruce Swedien has recently mixed and is enthusiastic about .

Finnish band with sub contra bass recorder!
http://www.gjallarhorn.com/news.html

Also, the band records with a microphone made by their live sound mixer and recording engineer Martin Kantola. Only 3 of these existed in the world as of 2006 - Martin's, Bruce Swedien's and Bjork has one:

Bruce has been recording since 1955, has recorded Duke Ellington, Michael Jackson - did "Thriller" in 1982. In 1962 did "Duke of Earl".

Also I recently stumbled upon a website specializing in Hawaiian music:

http://www.mele.com/

I must admit to being a sucker for the smooth, relaxed sound of much of this. The slack key and lap steel and falsetto harmonies. I can almost see the waves softly lapping the shore.

I bought a disc by a group called "Pilioha". Listen to track 4:

Listened to Sain Zahoor on youtube.  Hypnotic, hashish induced stuff.  Or, maybe that's just me.  Very ethnic.  Not your crossover variety.  Maybe the BBC should record this fellow.  Didn't see anything on Amazon.  Thanks, Raz.

The Real World Records label (owned by Peter Gabriel) has a very good, well-recorded, world library.

Hi Jim,

Happy New Year's to you.

A friend of mine went to Costa Rica and brought back a cd for me.  The music and sound quality are very good.  I later found it as an mp3 download over at cdbaby LINK.

This way you can sample it to see if you like the music.  While you are there check out the other artist from Costa Rica too,

Lou

Gordy, MJ, ecramer, raz, Russell D, and Lou (where you been?) and my patron, Z-  You guys are kindred.  I'm listening to Habib Kopite as I type.  I will purchase this and enjoy it for a long time.  It has integrity and sweet soul.  It's renewing.  jim

Caco and Caruso, it's seems I excluded you.  I certainly didn't mean to.

Did you ever get those recordings of the local concert featuring D'Gary and "the Miles Davis of flamenco" converted to silver?

Yes, it was finished and released in time for their cross-country tour starting Nov 3. It is widely distributed in Canada, but I'm not sure about the States. It's called "International Guitar Night II".

Top left on this page:

http://www.pacificmusic.net/

Unfortunately, I don't think they provide sound samples but I can send anyone an mp3 of one of the tracks - just send me your email address by PM, and state you preference in which single track you would like to hear.

Congratulations Russell!  I just received the following info in the newsletter from the nationally syndicated radio show "Echoes"...

Monday 02/04
ECHOES FEBRUARY CD OF THE MONTH
INTERNATIONAL GUITAR NIGHT II: BRIAN GORE, MIGUEL DE LA BASTIDE,
CLIVE CARROLL AND D'GARY
It's a finger-style fantasy for February when we explore International Guitar Night II. San Francisco guitarist Brian Gore gathers Canadian flamenco player Miguel De La Bastide, English finger-style picker Clive Carroll and the afro-centric Madagascan, D'Gary together on the same stage where they give a master class in finger-style techniques. Recorded live, the musicians engage in solos, duos, trios and quartets, reviving the the idea of the virtuoso guitar ensemble. We'll hear them as Echoes February CD of the Month.

Thanks, Gordy!

I just heard about this last night, from Mike Peters, the principal behind Pacific Music, but couldn't remember the name of the show.

I guess Mike has to send out 120 copies of IGN II to cover all the stations.

I don't know anything about Echoes - I'll have to check it out.

I know I start recording the next one (IGN III) in 12 days, in the same venue (Cowichan Theatre in Duncan, B.C.

This time the guitarists have the luxury of 5 days to get to know each others' work and to work out duos, trios and a quartet.

That's looks interesting.  Steven Tibbetts, Lisa Gerrard, Bombay Dub, not to mention that very nice job from BC.  Believe I'll hang.  Good work, G.
