Off the shelf CD r's any brand preference?
« on: 2 Oct 2007, 04:49 pm »
I'm looking to find some good experiences members have had with different brand CD R's?

I'm currently using just plain Sony discs
Thanks

One of the CD-R rules of thumb for off-the-shelf purchases is to grab ones that are made in Japan rather than Taiwan or China, since they are generally (always?) made by Taiyo Yuden which has a good reputation.  This doesn't directly map to a particular company like Sony/Imation/etc because they often source from multiple locations.

If you order online, you can specifically buy Taiyo Yuden, MAM-A, or one of the other good brands.  Here's one place you can get specific types: http://www.supermediastore.com

That's exactly correct what BradJudy says.

I have had the best luck so far with Memorex Black. It even sounds better than gold CD-Rs. I have no idea why it sounds better but it is readily available at Best Buy.

I use a variety of discs for daily use, but for important stuff I use only Mitsui.

The "black" CDs (actually very dark red) are one of the few ones I've had problems with.  My own players read them fine, but a couple of players at the RMAF two years ago didn't like them.  The McIntosh rep was particularly surprised because he said the player had read every other CD-R he tried.  Danny's CEC player that he has brought a couple of times had problems with multiple types of CD-R's.

BradJudy,What brand of players are you using and how did the black CD-Rs compare to others that you have used. In my and my friends listening tests the blacks have out performed the regular and gold Mitsui CD-Rs.

I've never bothered to try and compare sound quality of CD-R's.  I've only noted when items have had problems playing.

I did not have a good experience with the black CDR's as they scratched very easily and for some reason were very finicky in what player would read them
I too wanted to compare to the other discs out there but my main rigs CD Player would not read them.

I use memorex black here for years now, no problems with scratches and they sound wonderful.

I haven't noticed any difference in the sound of black vs silver vs gold.  It seems to me the software used to burn has a much greater impact than the disc, but that's just me.  I haven't tried an exhaustive 2X test of the various brands.  Mostly I prefer Mitsui for the reliability- I've never had one fail where I've had problems with Memorex.  Years ago I though they were good but virtually none of my early Memorex discs are still playable.

I've also had very good results with the Memorex Black CD-Rs. I've used them in my main CDP (Carver), Panny and Sony portables and quite a few different home and work PCs. The only read error I've had was a disc that was dropped and stepped on.
