Gradient's new model unusual, even for them!

Spied on 6moons yesterday:

Looks like a cardioid midrange, but the bass has me a little puzzled - it looks dipolar, but it also looks like the null would be facing the listener.

Funky - it would be interesting to hear.  The look is cool, although I would have gone with black instead of white.

Yours truly here is a Gradient dealer, but they haven't given me a clue about the new "Helsinki 1.5".

It wouldn't make sense to me for the design listening axis to be in the dipole woofer's null, so I speculate that toe-in (or lack thereof) is a critical part of the system's set-up.  My guess would be that the speakers are intended to be set up spaced fairly wide apart and with little or no toe-in, such that the anticipated listening area is well within the lobes of the dipole woofers' patterns.

I can also tell you that with the hammering the dollar is taking versus the euro (and the rest of the world's currency), yours truly here is probably not going to be stocking the Helsinki 1.5 anytime soon.

TAS reviewer Robert E. Greene has a long-standing appreciation for the work of Jorma Salmi of Gradient, and I would be a bit surprised if he hasn't already jockeyed for a first US review of the new speaker.  Here's a link to REG's site, where you can read about some of Jorma Salmi's earlier designs for Gradient as well as the new dynamic dipole from Jamo, including supplemental measurements that didn't make it into measurement-disdaining TAS's pages:

The new Helsinki 1.5s are very neutral sounding, but don't have much bass below 50hz.

Picture and measurement in the gallery.

Not many pairs in the US, so I don't think there'll be much feedback.

TAS reviewer Robert E. Greene gave the speaker a TAS GEA, and is working on a review.

There is, perhaps, more information on the Gradient Helsinki 1.5 than you can usefully digest in this blog:

As one of the few people in the US that's heard the speaker, I'd would agree with most of this guy's comments.

The key point that should taken from these comments, is unlike the writer's Harbeth 40s, the Helsinki 1.5s don't
require nearfiled listening to eliminate room interactions.
