Last night the sytem sounded so fantastic I did not want to turn it off so that today's audio meet could experience that.  I'm afraid when I turn it back on today it will sound just mediocre.  I have experienced this many times.  Why does that happen?  Am I not holdig the correct alcoholic beverage every time?  Are the moons not always aligned?

You are not alone in experiencing this phenomena.  The easy answer would be that systems sound better at night than during the day (cleaner electrical power), but I personally think it is more than that.  Sometimes magic happens and sometimes it does not.  It is one of the joys and wonders of the universe.
I do not think it is a result of what drink you are holding, but rather how many drinks you have held.

I think your emotional (happy, sad, depressed, etc... and physical (tired, full of energy, etc...) states have a lot to do with it.

While I don't disagree that electricity is more stable at night, I think the other factors I listed above play a bigger influence most of the time.

Enjoy your big get together Pete.

so true! I think you just have to be in the right mood and be relaxed enough to listen while silenceing everyday stress.

I've found the more I have to drink the less I remember how my system sounded....so I just overwrite my brain with a positive memory of the event and my system alwasy sounds it's best!

Sometimes the best music is no music at all. If you're playing music just because you feel there should always be music or focusing too much on your system then take a break for a while. It'll come back by itself. The upgraditis/searching for new music spiral can become exhausting.

a lot of it IS the power issue....

I used to go through that too until I took care of all my power issues.
Now it's good all the time!

I can listen to mine at three different times of the day ( morning, afternoon and night ) and have three different sounds, due to the demand for power as the day goes on.     Early morning there arent a lot of businesses open and residents A/C units arent running as much, but by mid afternoon, all of that has changed.   Evening rolls around and the system will sound good again ( if not better ) due to what I have mentioned with the afternoon demand for power.

Audiophiles will notice the changes more in their system than say a friend stopping by for a listen.

My system is entirely battery powered (except for the sub) for exactly the reason of not only eliminating AC issues but also expensive power cords and power cord rolling.  So, if AC issues are as big a role as some people here believe, my system would be one of the more consistent ones throughout the day.  Nonetheless, I still find that my mood and state of mind have more to do with my engagement with the music than anything.

Yep, like some of the other posts here it's one of two things or a combination of those two: AC being influenced by external circumstances and my state of mind.

In the music room here AC abnormalities aren't an issue since that's been addressed. Before I had the AC adequately addressed, I could litterally pick out what was different and not right when the AC was really being screwed with.

My mental state is an ongoing issue (don't even go there... LOL!). Most of the time if I'm distracted or stressed, the playback just takes me out of all that. On occasion though, when I find myself unwilling to be calmed for whatever reason, I might as well read a book or blow up one of our cats :o The music means nothing to me and since I don't care to be engaged, it's boring. Fortunately, that's not often but when I'm off my end, even my wife's advances are boring

I have nothing to add to Robert's post - other than to say that it mirrors my own experiences almost completely. Ok there is on exception, since I don't have any cats - I'd have to blow up the bird instead.  Hey, it'll be a quick death....

seriously. music for the sake of music is a silly thing. silence is a good thing sometimes. this is why books exist 8)
